Is it worth me giving my phone number to steam?

I just got a new phone, so I can finally get the new steam app and get the authenticator. However to get the authenticaor to work on my phone I have to give my phone number. I was anoyed by this. If I am to give my number to steam I would like to know:


- Will steam pass on my phone number to anyone?

- Do I need to waste money on texts and calls to ensure the saftey of my account?

- Could I just give a fake number, or do I need my real number (Could you explain why?)


Im really anoyed that steam felt they had to add this, trading is now a nightmare and getting the final steam comunity achivement this is proving to be a pain to get.
