Wait . . Steam is trying to force me to buy a "smartphone"?
This cant't be right, but I read it in another thread.

I don't have a "smartphone", and I have no reason to buy one.

.The same exact system is used by origin yet they don't have anything near that amount of hacked account.
Apples and oranges. You can't compare both services in this regard.

yea because one sells games and the other sells games. Two complete things especially when you look that origin is not even having "steam guard" type of authetification via email...yet somehow less accounts hacked and better support....this according to Gabe himself who said steam support sucks.

You seem to forget Origin lacks a trading enviroment (which this feature is about). They also lack a user marketplace and lots of in game items valued into hundreds of dollars.

Origin is simply way less profitable than Steam for account thieves.

http://kotaku.com/5960503/origin-users-are-suddenly-getting-hacked-a-lot/all

Again, apples and oranges.

PS: If you want a better comparison look into Blizzard and their Diablo 3 auction house. Lots of account theft -like Steam-, lots of trade scams -like steam-, forcing users into using 2FA to protect their accounts -like steam-... And ultimately closing their diablo auction house.

Well I don't mind the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, thing is that I'm missing out on good deals because a lot of people don't use this app. Yesterday I traded 16 people and only 3 had the app... and the day before that I traded around 14 people and only 2 has the app. 3 days waiting is way too long.
It's crazy that when I log in I have to use a password, then use a code on my phone to confirm the login and when trading I must confirm emails (which I'm forced to use as well just like the Mobile Authenticator)
I think there should be a option for people to choose if they want to use the Mobile Authenticator, not put a 3 days waiting period. Not using it is at their own risk.

...and the reverse of this is the Windows Phone owners like me (whom Valve now hate) who CANNOT use the app are now being blacklisted from trade after trade by sellers who are openly stating they will not deal with anyone not using the authenticator.

If the idea is to make it so difficult to trade that we will simply give up and use the market, Valve are kidding themselves. Most of the people I've been talking to are simply walking away and keeping their money.

Right here. Don't have a smartphone, don't need one, certainly don't want one. This would go over much better with me if it was a *cheap* but reliable device a la Blizzard Authenticator. Something you buy once for like 6 euros and lasts the next 5 years at least. Requiring people to buy third-party crap they don't need is patently awful.

Don't have a smartphone. Don't have a need for a smartphone. Don't have the income for a smartphone. Don't WANT a smartphone. AND DON'T WANT A 3 DAY DAMN TRADE HOLD!!!

"I don't care" is not a convincing argument
It seems the de-facto argument for pro-escrow people.

"You don't want Steam to go to ♥♥♥♥? Well, I don't care... ergo no change is needed. I thriump you. Look at my smartphone and you know I am right!"

or am I wrong?

Actually the auction house got closed because new developers took over, and they found like fans that the auction house was deterimental to the Diablo gameplay.

Funny, I was going to enable the authenticator app with my son's tablet, only to forget before bed. When I got up the next day, he comes running through the house and falls on the thing, and shattered the entire screen. Now, the touch screen doesn't work and it's completely useless. I almost got locked out of my account. OMG I'm so glad I didn't set it up when I intended to. I'm just going to stick with the 3 day wait and forget trading with my TF2 items otherwise. I would use the desktop app workaround, but to me, that's even less secure because I don't know anything about the group/person who made the app to begin with.

Too bad, I'm not buying any more crate keys because it's going to be too much of a hassle to trade for me. I got a thrill out of the gamble of uncrating items, and sometimes I get items worth more than the key I used, so I would trade those off, but now...

I get the reason why, but it doesn't mean I like it nor agree with how it was imposed. RIP Trading.

I like them so called arguments. I am old fashioned and I have phone for: calling, texting and music. Single reason why I should buy a smartphone because of PC PLATFORM, other than "Valve decided so"? All other 2 step verification systems I used work with my current phone, why doesn't this? Really, you are just defending Valve being lazy here.

This is the 21 first century! WHO DOSNT HAVE A SMARTPHONE?
not everyone has 100 - 600$

You can get a boost mobile phone for WAY less than that estimate.
