UX Redesign of Steam Mobile
Hi everyone,
I’m thinking of doing a case study redesign of the mobile app. In particular, the journey of browsing, then choosing and buying a game.
I’d really appreciate any feedback about pain points on this and hear of your experiences doing so.
What sucks, what works and why? What about the visual design?
How do you feel during that user journey?

Please reach out with your story.

The *only* thing I use Steam mobile for is reading/commenting on discussion boards.

Oh, I guess the Steam Guard function as well. But that is rare, just the random times Steam makes me sign back in on my various computers.

Overall though, the app could certainly use some work. I just hope if they do re-design it they don't go the whole "modern interface" look that everything seems to go to now. The thing where the UI gets prettier, but not as functional. Ugh.

There's an icon to fullscreen the video, but on the mobile client it does nothing. Video players back in the 90s could go fullscreen! You won't find a single mobile app with a video player that lacks this functionality. It works fine on the PC client and in a browser, so there's nothing in the video format preventing it.

Given that the button is there, Valve seems to have intended to add it, but couldn't or didn't get around to it. Odder still, I tend to find that videos look wider in portrait mode than in landscape.

Promo videos are pretty key to selling a game. If I can't make out half of what I'm seeing why bother?

As I mentioned in its own thread, the plus button that shows you ALL the tags a game has on it forces the cursor into the text entry box. That brings up the keyboard and hides some tags!

I have a large Steam library. I can view it on PC just fine. On mobile it just hangs with the progress spinner. This suggests that the client is trying (and usually failing) to present it on a single page. Maybe they could allow it to broken up into pages?

I might want to confirm which games in a series I already own. The gyrations I go through to do it are ridiculous. Steam by default tends to hide (whether I checked the box or not) games I already own. Games that were removed from the store I have to be on my PC or use steamdb.info logged in to confirm ownership of. It's all needless aggravation.
