Best 'Metroidvania' type games on Steam?

With the release of Guacamelee! today on Steam, now seems like a good time to talk about other quality games from the subgenre that are available.

I've never played Cave Story , but I've heard great things. What else is there?

Well, that's the problem... people make up all sorts of names for the "same old". I really have no real idea what a "metroidvania" game is supposed to be either -- every other game or so is labelled as "metoidvania", so as far as I can tell it could just as well mean you can run left and right.

Every other game? Sure, okay, let's just take that dramatization to a whole new level, shall we?

Its a game. Where you run. And jump. And kill things, usually. And occasionally, you go back to old areas to find new things. Like Metroid. Add in RPG elements, like levelling up. And weapons. And equipment. Like Castlevania.

Try La-Mulana it's a pretty a nice adventure platform game with metroid elements.

i agree with Unepic being good but i would actually recommend to play Castlevania: SOTN from a PSX emulator, since we dont have a port to PC.
