You host the servers yourself on your own boxes or you rent them. So at the core, its actually an out of pocket expense for the server owner. It is possible that some turn a profit through selling of admin or other perks though.

If you had something better than a home line yes. Latency and upload are key factors. If you have DSL or Cable at home? No.
