What does it mean to subscribe to an item in the Workshop?

I've read that there is a button to subscribe to an item but i have looked at a bunch of indivdual items and i cant find any subscribe button anywhere. What am I missing here?

No you don't need to favourite anything to download it.

What you SHOULD be seeing is a green subscribe button like this (I just chose one randomly)[i.imgur.com]

The subscribe button is more like a download button. Except that it also keeps the mod up to date automatically.

the sucribe button makes you download the mod and updating it at each update
