Does your Steam profile matter to you?
Harmless question, kinda curious. I see people with like Level 50 Steam profiles, thousands upon thousands of games with the majority untouched, massive thousand word profile bios, hundreds of Steam friends. Thousands of dollars and hours spent.

Why do you care about your Steam profile? Bragging rights? Do you feel it represents your gaming life (separate from your "real life")? Is it weird to have a "gaming life"? Is it just a big part of how you spend your free time? A hobby? Your favorite hobby? Do you have too much free time? Do you wish you spent your free time doing other stuff?

If you "don't care" about your Steam profile, why not? Do you not play on Steam enough to care? Do you just not get into the "community" aspects of it? Is building up your virtual self a waste of time?

I feel Steam profiles are a preview of what the person is like.

How it looks, sure. But I couldn't care less about the Steam level thing.

Hey! You said "question" not an interrogation avalanche >_>

To answer some of your many...many questions [imho]

▷ Possible reasons behind untouched games: Many peeps collect games, others buy games during while they're cheap just before upgrading their PC's, others just get them by default from bundles that give only 1 key for like 5 games.

▷ Long winded walls of text on profiles: Because some peeps got lost on their way to Facebook

Honestly, I do not think a detailed description of my personality, hopes, dreams, future plans, blood type, zodiacal sign, the last time my dog got fleas and a link to a "duck face selfie" are remotely relevant to [most] peeps on a gaming service but hey, if others do it then more powah to them... I just won't bother reading it [You won't drag me into your issues damn it!] :happymeat:

▷ Hundreds of friends: Define friends? If you mean complete internet strangers you probably won't even interact with, then yes. Some peeps like to collect those too [just like on Facebook]

▷ Time and money spent: Games cost money - playing games requires time, yup.

▷ Entire second paragraph: Some peeps enjoy leveling up and collecting all kinds of virtual goodies and have the disposable income for it. Others do it so they can have more things to add to their profile or a bigger chance of booster packs. A select few do it because higher level = dem feelings of more importance kick in. >_>

In any case, how they decide to spend their free time is irrelevant.

▷ Last paragraph: Damn it! I don't know. I've written a damn wall of text already... argh! *storms out of thread*

*GASP* How dare you suggest I am a compulsive buyer who engages in the fine arts of procrastination ?! :csgoskull:

Seriously though, I completely disagree that a virtual profile is a preview a person. It's their game collection what can give you some better clues on that

Yeah well, the profile is "just there". Not much I can do about it, but if anyone wants to know what games I have on Steam, or my achievements, be my guest.

There isn't much practical use for these profiles, if any at all. Can't think of anything right now.

I like to customize it, get a profile background, make a new avatar, fix up my showcase and show off badges.

I guess the question isn't what you like to do with your profile, but why do you like it?

I play Skyrim and don't need to be online, so by doing so I bypass the community. However I check out the discussions from any of the categories from time to time, like now. As for the profiles? I don't check them out. I don't believe all are a preview of the actual person. Some might be, others, a facade. My profile is honest, without divulging too much. Take it as it is. I've seen lots of issues people have with steam, therefore unless it interests me, I'll avoid it. Like right now there aren't any games I'm interested in or already have, so I won't be visitng the store. I'll check out the ads to see what is offered, though. So, my steam level is one, and might very well remain that way for some time. So, I'm either in Skyrim, in some discussion, or off line altogether.

I don't care about Steam levels.

I keep my profile set to friends only because generally i'm not here to socialize, I'm here for gaming and game issues. Sometimes this upsets people, who then accuse me of wearing headgear crafted out of aluminum wrap. Oh well.

Hundreds of friends? No. I friend only people who I either know already, or whom I feel I might have some chance of playing games or chatting with due to certain gaming compatibilities. I don't accept random friend requests or chats. I'm not unfriendly, I'm just odd and reclusive.

Unloaded games in my library are simply due to the fact that I don't/can't game 24/7. I'll get around to them eventually.

Thousand word bios? Well, whatever carries your kayak I suppose. Mine's fairly short, not very revealing, and to the point: what sort of games I like to play. I neither have any inclination to brag nor stockpile "e-rep' on Steam, it is here as a launcher for my games and a storefront primarily and little else. The only thing it "represents" is what games I've purchased licenses for.

I like aluminum head gear. It can multi-task as a sandwich wrap or cooking surface. Also keeps the aliens out of my head.

I prefer plastering up all of the angles in each room of the house so that the hounds of Tindalos can't enter.

I do not care about levels, experience or even the number of friends I have. I do not have a long list of games that I do not play (one or two at the most). Heck, for that matter I do not even own many games on physical media. Friends I do have, I have common interests with, I am do not care about a big friends list.

I like gaming and will play the games I like.
