Steam..the death of the PC as a games platform.
Steam is a NIGHTMARE ...if you want to spend weeks trying to play a game you've bought then make it a STEAM controlled game!!!...I remember the old days when I actually OWNED the games I BOUGHT and could play them when I chose to. How did these people manage to muscle into so many games and take control of them?..they are so paranoid about people pirating games which are mostly just a couple of bucks anyway they make it virtually impossible for the purchasers to play them too...RIDICULOUS! They insist on you spending hours installing Steam this, that, and the other, which you want absolutley nothing to do with before you can play your own game and then because of them it mostly doesn't work anyway..I have spent HOURS messing around trying to get stuff to work simply because of Steam..I shall avoid any game bearing the Steam logo in the future.

I do love steam now I have gotten used to it. But I look at games I still own in the box, Westwood,s blade runner, SHOGO, MAD the art work alone on the box was amazing, felt like you got something extra with your Money, like MP3 and Vinyl, always seems nice when you get art work on an album. Digital is fine but its barebones.

Buying the disk still means you own a pysichal copy of it, rather then a digital copy. Thats the point he was making.

You still don't own it, even with a disk. This is from Warcraft III's User Manual (back when games actually came with a big ol' book as a manual).

Yeah, the possiblity of having to pay full price a second time because of a lost or damaged/unreadable disk sure was awesome. But is your point now that you can't pirate as easily by simply giving your brother-in-law the disk?

Edit: Ah, guess I should have quoted to prevent post deletion confusion.

LOVE STEAM and digital download formats.

I buy a game while at work, click download and it installs to my PC at home so it's there when I get home. I don't have discs and boxes to store...if I change pcs I copy one folder via a crossover cable and my 400 gigs of games are on my new pc in a hour or two rather than pulling out all the boxes and installing 1 at a time. They are in library that is easy to us.

I agree with that

Captgolightly At one time I would have agreed with you, I look back at the time I could buy a boxed version of a game go home, load it and not have to sign into anywere just to play it, But PC gaming now is changing, For the better? Im not sure. You have to be a pragmatist in gaming today. I have grown to love Steam, and lets be honest its the way PC gaming has gone, you want to play Final fantasy 7 on PC, how have to sign up to Square Enix, any Ubisoft game you have to sign up to the rubbish Uplay, which I do not do, I detest Uplay.

But everyone wants a piece of the new digital download market and on most games you need to sign up to one company or another just to play it. There are times wish I could go out again and buy a boxed copy and put it on and just play, long gone are those days. Steam is not perfect, something needs to be done about refunds, but its a system I have grown used to, we have to.

I take your point, I was raging against the machine to an extent I suppose, as in fairness I have returned to pc from 4 years of using a console for gaming so I'm adjusting to a new reality it seems . So why does Ship Sim extremes crash and become unresponsive in the Steam Access code input screen? particularly annoying as the sea is looking good! and in fact for those who mentioned it my connection is via Iphone "personal hotspot" as I live aboard a boat.
