Too much screenshot spam
IMO, there are too much screenshots spam in almost every games screenshot folder, making the good ones drowning in the crowd. I think this is sad, both for the good screenshots, and for the users. Because I think it is annoying, when I browse the screenshot folder in the community hub, that I meet all of this pointless spam, and only a few good screenshots.
Some people have a tendency to take a lot of almost identical screenshots, and then publish them in the community hub. Or sometimes just upload a senseless or a boring screenshot, or a screenshot, which concept already exist in 50 copies.
I think that should be some screenshot upload restrictions. Maybe that a screenshot MUST have a caption to be publish. Or that people only can publish 2 or 3 screenshot for each game, and must obtain X number of likes and/or favorites, to be able to publish more screenshots.

For me a good screenshot is one (or more) of the following:
  • Funny
  • Informative
  • Spectacular
  • Extraordinary
  • Original
  • Satirical
  • Or in other ways interesting for other people

Specific examples of screenshots I have marked as favorites, because I find them original, and/or funny and/or extraordinary:

BioShock Infinite / Duke Nukem 3D:

In this screenshot, the creator have not just managed to catch a screenshot in the right moment, to get a fitting facial expression. He have also add some more, and creating a hilarious screenshot, with a point, that everybody, who know both games, catches at once. This screenshot is so great, that it's not even needs a caption.

BioShock Infinite:

By Stan
Another great screenshot, that actually not needs a caption - because the screenshot says it all. This screenshot is pure art! The creator manage to catch this screenshot the very correct second, there Elisabeth stands in front of a poster, and almost become a part with the poster.

XCOM Enemy Unknown:
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=217060694
By Shrek, "The Ogrelord"
Another good Screenshot. Here have the creator made his own artwork, with a comical point, there several fans might think "It's funny because it's true".

I know that these magnificent screenshots already have a lot of favorites and likes. But I think there are some other great screenshots, that never reach the audience, because it drowns in all the spam.
I think, that Steam needs to make some restrictions, so the good screenshots - those, that screenshots are meant for - not drowns in the oceans of spam, that exist today.

And I'm sorry for my bad English. But I hope you'll understand me anyway.

Why should anyone be denied from uploading screenshots just because you don't like them?

Not because I don't like them, but because they are of low quality.
And not denied - just limited; let peoples preferences decide, as I say.

But, you probably feel offended? With all respect, your own 7 screenshots not seems quite interesting - 6 out of 7 are the same character, in vapid situations.

I agree. When these spammers create 1000, 1500, or even 2000 screenshots, that puts pressure on the rest of us to increase our own screenshot count.

That's just your opinion. And I'm not talking for myself here, I don't even remember uploading any screenshots. But there are plenty of people who enjoy taking screenshots and shouldn't have to be limited just because they lack the ability to take great screenshots. This isn't a photography site.

Yes exactly!

But if people takes 10, 15, 20, or 100 of the almost exact same screenshot, and publish them, they are not just bad in my taste - they are actually spam! And that steal place for those, who wants to publish real screenshots.
And it is not because, that if one hit F12 by mistake, ones screenshot is then automatically publish. One actually have to publish them oneself, active, via the local screenshot menu.
Yes, it is a matter of opinion and taste. And people may think a screenshot is good, that I think is bad, and vice versa. But again, to oppose against that people just publish a lot of the same screenshots, is not just a matter of opinion. It is, IMO, a relevant point of criticism.

A screenshot don't have to be a masterpiece (none of mine are). They just have to be relevant, in some way, for the common gamer - and not just for one self.

The screenshot function in Community Hub is meant to be a "show window" for screenshots - not that narcissistic people can spam it with a lot of unimportant and trivial screenshots, so they and their profile can be seen.

Spam could be relative yes but remember people don't go looking through the community hub to see if there is a similar screenshot. Also remember that some just upload to share with their friends, but it still get posted to the community hub which is the main cause of the multiple same screenshots.

I'm not gonna argue that the system between uploading to profile and uploading to the game hub could have been done better, but limiting is not the answer as that would do harm to those who just enjoy sharing screenshots with friends.

I'm glad only the top voted ones appear the first time you look at the tab. There's a person once that uploaded 5000 screenshots of nothing but scoreboards. Fortunately no one sane up voted any of them so it remain buried in the abyss of the hub.

No matter how much I hate senseless bombardment of the screenshot hub,I don't agree with any of your suggestions. People should be free to upload any and as many screenshots as they want, the people will upvote the good ones and leave the bad ones buried. The "most popular" sorting feature of the hub was made for this specific reason.

Of the three you cited in your opening post, the only good and legitimate screen shot was the one by Stan. The other 2 are actually art work and the last one was stupid.

The problem with the "most popular" function, combined with the enormous amount of screenshot is, that new, good screenshots, almost never get a chance to be popular, or even visible.
I like to go into the Community Hub screenshots in some of my games, and sort by "most resent", to see what is new. But every time I get overwhelmed by all the indifferent spam that is. And if there are others who feel the same way, there are many good screenshots that never get the chance.

If you don't like other people screenshots, ignore them.

I've had times that I've been stuck on something that google has had no hits on. I've been happy to be able to wade through all those screen shots that you would have disqualified to find the one thing that would help me.

I don't have a problem with this, and I would hate to have even more stupid rules placed on steam.

So my vote is NO - steam does not need more rules especially not extra rules for screen snapshots that we might want to share.
