Steam OS merged with React Os
react os is a fully opensource win32 operating system built from scratch, the source code is here http://www.reactos.org/wiki/Subversion and the site is here http://www.reactos.org, i run react os on two pcs, i run many games with no problems, all my drivers work, they see normal windows pcs over LAN, they get great preformance better then when the pcs were running xp, and they use way less memory like 50mb on a full install, these computers i run them on have phenon II x2s, 3gb of ram, hd 3550, 320 2.5' hdds identical specs on them both just one has no optical drive, i tried steam os and a not of games wont run in a linux enviroment, im wondering if linux is open source and react os is open source is it possable to merge the kernels to make a new hybrid kernel that can execute both windows and linux code>???

Wait, you want to merge the Linux kernel with an open source Win32 one?

Why not just run your Windows stuff on WINE that provides a fully functional Win32API, but not the kernel?

i do use wine, but i was thinking an os that just runs anything from linux or windows like if developers make a crap linux driver, you could just use the windows one, or if a game requires direct x and .net framework just install it ya know? no problems everything just works, if you have the source code to both oses and a nice team, its not impossible. it might be better then linux and windows, and with both source codes can be ported to any kinda hardware like arm processors and raspberry pi, no kinda layer between software and hardware, no translantion direct x to opengl, it just has direct x installed, or opengl installed so it all just works

You can't merge kernels. Ultimately, one kernel or another has to have control of the underlying hardware. At best, you can run a thin layer that makes each kernel think it's running alone on the machine, which is pretty much the principle of a virtual machine.

The same thing to do if you wanted something like this is to have one kernel that provides both a POSIX and a Win32 API to user processes, and had the right interfaces to support both Linux and Win32 drivers.

What I would be worried about though is that preserving perfect binary compatibility with Windows is going to be a really severe constraint. That's a tough challenge.

i dont mean to merge them like copy and paste the code into one project, i mean completley build a new kernel based on both steam os and react os

well i found this http://www.longene.org/en/index.php its called the Unified Kernel they claim to have merged the NT (win2003 and linux 3.6 kernel) im downloading it right now..

they say "The Longene is a free, open-source computer operating system kernel project intended to expand the Linux Kernel to be binary-compatible with application software and device drivers not only made for Microsoft Windows but also made for Linux OS.……"
