Here's the thing, the OS is still built around Linux, which means that not all of my game library will be supported. Hell, not even all hardware will be supported by Steam OS. I've literally had graphic cards that refused to work properly in Linux.
If I could install Steam OS and replace Windows as my OS and still have access to my full library, NetFlix and web pages, you bet your sweet ass I'd convert to Steam OS, that'd be amazing. But I can't and I won't. It means NOTHING for those of us who uses a Windows based desktop.
Exactly how would they "ditch" PCs? The Steam Box is nothing more then a Linux based media center. Besides that, their entire distribution platform is based around PC gamers, it's not going to happen.
I am more annoyed with Valve's sudden boner for Linux. Until Linux is as main stream as Windows, until it supports all my programs and hardware 100%, I am not going to convert just because someone over at Valve is on their peroid about Windows.
I am willing to bet, most likely not. steamOS is most likely designed for their steam box coming out in 2014, to bring their paltform into people's living rooms. I assume their target clients aren't going to want to ♥♥♥♥ around with stuff like that, they are going to want to plug it in and use it.
By allowing people to easily have access to command lines and the internal workings of their software, they open themselves up to millions of more complaints and problems then they would have before.
I am going to guess it's going to work a lot like Android phones, where, if people have the know how and will to do so, they can compile their own versions of the OS, but it's not going to be something you can just do out of the box, or ♥♥♥♥ up the entire thing without having to jump through some hurdles first.
Hmmm that was my attempt at a rather turd joke damn you emtionless internet!!!
I just hope that whatever Valve decide to with this piece of software it will be thoroughly tested. I remember the days of NDISwrapper on older versions of linux all too well, not to mention I tried Unity on Ubuntu (which is a super dump UI) I was still getting kernel panics, in 2013!!
They mentioned you will be able to play around with the Steam machine, install anything/any OS etc, so I guess you'll be able to do just that. One might think along the lines of installing a shell designed for normal computing (like GNOME/Unity/KDE/XFCE etc) on top of Steam OS on a laptop. Sign in to the computer with the default Steam OS shell for it to be a "living room" machine, and sign in to it with the other shell for normal computing.
I think it will be a big plus for Linux users if SteamOS gave access to the command line, but I also forsee problems if a non-Linux savvy user starts playing around with the terminal. The recovery image had better be easy to restore to.
p/s: srr for my bad english
hence the reason you use analog gamepad controller.
it isn't really about optimizing nVidia for steamOS. It is actually about nVidia finally confirming that they sucked at supporting nVidia for Linux, and with steamOS built around Linux, they saw the light coming (just my guess, assuming steamOS is Linux you might be able to run to run those games in Debian / Ubuntu / Fedora / Red Hat / Mandriva / whatever-x86-Linux-flavor-you'd-like).
ATI driver support in Linux since they're from AMD, and both AMD and Intel are good supporters of Linux (although Intel sometimes have their own way in Linux such as support over Intel-owned C compiler rather than the GNU C Compiler, but that's a different story, not for this thread), so you shouldn't be worried much.
ive even considered getting a steam machine and putting windows in it to use as pc gaming
