It will be free, so you won't be spending money on it. Whether it's even worth being 'free' is another matter entirely.

do people blindly see the word beta and asume it's finished... computers require some level of inteligence. if you dont realise the point now you may never will, just try to open your eyes for your own sake. Read up on linux and valve goals. while your at it do some reseach on microsoft, there are very important reasons why linux support is demanded.
valve took at least 8 years to start listening to the linux crowd and by that time they were hooked, they just need to make the OS more 'user friendly' for the windows folk.
this time next year the OS will have most major issuses resolved and hopfully if the gfx manufacturers play ball drivers will be more commonly acceptable, I'm using a AMD radeon HD 7850 gfx card with the beta AMD driver will very good results so far.
Which company? Sony or Microsoft? Because those are the ones wasting millions in each console generation.
And because it´s not the case of Valve. They are just launching a new distro of linux and let other hardware companies to take the risks.
Personally I don´t see the point of Steam OS. It does not offers anything new to the player. The only benefits are for Valve, to build their own "walled garden"
SteamOS is first and foremost for the Steam Machine (Valve’s Console) it’s a bonus that you can run it on your Computer without any special hardware. We already have a Steam Machine confirmed at the same cost of this generation of consoles, and when you buy a new console how many games does it support 6 to 8 titles maybe …. Right out of the box a steam machine will have hundreds of Linux titles compatible with it and its library will grow from that point just like any console. As a bonus it can stream any Windows title playing on your gaming computer directly to your TV or be installed on your PC as a pure environment to run games.
It’s sort of like Sony building the PS4 then saying. “oh…by the way here’s our PS4 operating system to load on your computer so you can play all our games on your PC as well” …. LOL
But the real advantage is on the development end. Since the PS4, Mac OS, Android, and Linux all use OpenGL porting games between these systems become much easier.
