I can't wait for SteamOS to drop, I've already purchased parts to build a new machine in a HTCP case just to run SteamOS. Just curious if anyone has any ideas what distro of linux it will be based upon, I hope OpenSuse, its my favorite so far.

I’m very excited about a Linux based Steam OS. With Valve and NVidia partnering to bring OpenGL up to speed and a game optimised OS we could really get some more horsepower out of our PC’s. I don’t know about you guys but I’ve been fighting with MicroCrap and windows for years to minimise its overhead on my systems. If I don’t have to boot into Windows to game I can see a day when I don’t boot it up at all. And that’s a good thing because I hate what they did with Windows 8 so I need a new go-to operating system and it might as well be Linux.

Valve doesn’t believe in exclusive titles to push hardware and I for one respect the hell out of that. They’ll have no problem moving PC gamers over to the SteamOS if they can optimise it to the point that it gives PC gamers a 10 to 15 percent increase in performance (and I think that’s doable). I absolutely hate exclusive titles and if Valve is successful at challenging the living room kings developers may have to start to think twice before signing those exclusive contracts and cutting themselves out of to north of 65 million steam users. Steam connects developers directly to customers cutting out expensive marketing and retail distribution. It’s a safe bet that developers make a hell of a lot more money on a game sold on steam so I would expect it will not take much coaxing from Valve to bring titles to the SteamOS.

The console junkies are going to be a Harder sell to move them over to the Steam Machine. I think the message Valve needs to get out to them is the OPEN box environment, use any USB device, hook up an external hard drive, listen to Mp3’s, upgrade hardware, always backwardly compatible with older games, game mods and user generated content, play with a controller or device of your choice….etc.

The cost will be the last challenge and 70% of that cost is going to be the GPU. That said NVidia would be stupid not to work out a deal with Valve to work out a huge discount on their GPU’s. Having console like device in living rooms that are upgradable by users is a huge bonus for a company like NVidia.

Go Valve …. Full Steam ahead!!!!!!

If you want more opinions, here's mine: At the moment I am not very interested in the Steam OS or the Steam Machine. My current setup (a powerful Windows PC for gaming and some work and entertainment, consoles for games not released on PC) works just fine.

I hope that they have good video card/hdmi support in the OS. I only say this, since I already, kinda jumped the gun and built a SteamOS machine for my TV, just needs the OS to launch. currently I've tried ubuntu and opensuse and no resolution fits my tv perfectly (without some 3rd party tool, and still some games wont launch). Nativly the 2 linux OS's I've used display a piture larger than my tv screen actually is. I would assume since SteamOS is made for a living room setup, it should be just fine. I still can't wait to get SteamOS running! "Coming Soon" isn't soon enough :P

steamos is linux based it comes with openoffice tools for free and much more. I have linux mint on my laptop so glad i got rid of windows from it. I have installed the linux version of steam and it works great and looks the same as the windows version of it, I think most of the upper posts here are from users who have never seen or used linux os it is a shame you have all missed out on it so far and steamos will blow you away. Oh yes i forgot to say if you research linux you will find you are already using it along side millions of others who have no clue they are users, yes that is right the smart phone is using a very early version of linux that has been remaned and tailored to suit the smart phone but under a new name like ice cream and so on. For me i am very happy linux is finally going to be made into a gaming software it needs this to be done because of yet windows have ruled the pc os market for far too long and owned driver software cutting linux support off in it's tracks having this new driver support will be the end of windows in the gaming world.

ubuntu has too much garbage like windows try looking for linux mint they have just released a new version and it hardware support is not too bad, I have it on an older laptop and to be fair it boots very quick compared to my newer windows based laptop. Linux mint dose also has support for windows drivers for some hardware profiles.

Thanks! I heard some decent things about Linux Mint, I'll install it now and see how it goes.
Installing Linux on this machine is more or less a time killer as I wait for the SteamOS to drop.
I wasn't a huge fan of ubuntu, OpenSuse kinda stole the show when I used it. Time to Give Mint a try.

This isn't an OS problem, it's a TV one. It sounds like your TV is set to have overscan - check the settings for a 1:1 pixel mode or a way to turn off overscan.

If your TV sucks and has forced overscan, try turning on the 'underscan' options in your Nvidia settings (they're under X Server Display Configuration). It will hurt the image quality a bit but should solve the issue of text being cut off.
