approximate value of 1million gems
So the profile auction just passed 1m last night. Let's do some math here.

it costs a minimum of .03 cents to get a background worth 100 gems. I have yet to find any backgrounds that give more than 100 for that price. So for the cheapest price:

.03=100
.03 x 10= .30 cents = 1000 gems

So by that math, someone has paid 30k bucks for a profile that will dissappear in 6 months?

Someone tell me if Im just failing at math or if people really are that stupid with their money

it's more likely they bought 1k gem stacks at about 60 cents each. still, costs thousands of dollars in total.

also the person who bid 105k gems for cs go is an idiot, those gems are worth minimum 45$ on market even when you account for deflation from adding 105 1k gem stacks into the picture.

cs go costs $15. go buy three.

But the thing is: there will only be 100 of those profile backgrounds. and it's tradable. and it makes your name golden. I bet traders are anxious to have their name stand out among the masses, and even then, it's a limited and high demand commodity simply because it's so rare.

"This item is not tradable nor can it be listed on the Steam Community Market.

This item is good for a limited time and will expire Jan 16th, 2015."

Oh, and if you want your name / avatar to show up in a bright colour, just launch a game.

Oh it's not tradable.. but still, when you join a game the color is lime green. a mid gold tone would possibly bring in far more activity and allow a trader to get more business.

that changes things. I didnt realize gem stacks had been added back to the market again. Either way, anyone who has that much money to pay for a profile that doesnt last is an idiot

If the gold effect was permanent, I could maybe see it having some value (still a little too similar to the in-game colour in my opinion, but i'm partially colourblind so that might be why).

The fact that it lasts only a month before disappearing completely makes anything above $50 a ridiculous amount to pay. Maybe the "winners" will get lots of random friend requests and pointless profile comments during that month, but is that really worth paying thousands for?

lets say gems are .60 cents from market for 1000. That means it would cost 600 bucks for profiles that lasts a month. Anyone willing to spend that much doesnt deserve to have that money in the first place for being an idiot

You're failing at maths, 1000x0.3 is $300 not $30,000

That's not remotely worth it
