It's a completely free CCG with absolutely no pay-to-win aspects. Cards can only be unlocked through playing (although you can also get one random card per day free, ranging from the most common to super rare). There is a fairly small but active community, but you can also play against the AI.
Play the campaign and the tutorial. They helped me explain the game mechanics a great deal and how to play with the different decks. The challenges or what ever they're called were also good in showing off good combos and neat tricks I would never have thought of myself.
Like using abillities from the... command area? without actually summoning the cards.
