Although with Steam's new controller coming out later this year I'm intrigued by that as well.
I have been told Steam Controller only will work with the Steam Machine and Steam Link and can not be used individually which I thought was silly, so I did not believe it. I'm thinking of waiting and getting a Steam Controller.
Fortunately I'm sat at a desk most of the time I am gaming, so I can use a wired Xbox One controller which is by far the best I've ever used. I'm hoping they will release a wireless adapter for it soon.
In other words, if you want something that just works and causes no problems unless you're talking about games with bad controller support, XBox360 is the way to go.
Sorry Logitech. I'm sure you have working drivers, but I have no idea how similar your layout is to the XBox360 controller (being able to configure things is great. Not having to do that is greater), and I don't know how many games have Logitech button prompts and Logitech controller images. Hence, I cannot recommend them :-)

Google: microsoft xbox 360 controller for windows (this one does not need to download anything just plug & play as long you are using a windows system)
@OP: If you mainly plan on using it for games that require the sticks go 360, if you plan to use the d-pad more go with a Logitech, 360 dpads are horrendous.
