Can't ban people from group
I own a tradegroup, lately we've had an influx of idiots spamming their ♥♥♥♥♥♥ phishing urls.
We can only kick them from the group, but as it's a tradegroup its free for everyone to join, so they can get back in seconds later.

PLEASE add the option to ban people from a group rather then just kick.
This guy obviously didn't post any comments in the discussion pages cause then I'd be able to ban him yes..

+1 it needs to be done.
Karades Oct 5, 2014 @ 5:11pm
Agree with that, groups should have options like that to get rid of spammers/ scammers / pishers etc.
Kacer Oct 5, 2014 @ 5:21pm
+1 totally agree.
Valve... changing some colors and changing steamstore layout doesn't make steam itself any better... we need UPDATES, we need USER/GROUPCHAT IMPROVEMENTS we need MORE ADMINISTRATION.

P.S. Another problem that is going for years! : Spammmers join a groupchat they'll spam and leave the chat instantly, leaving NO chance to ban the user from the groupchat.

As I am moderating groups and group chats a lot, I do definitely agree with both suggestions, the ban option for groups and the option to ban users who already left the chat.
As the test showed, users actually cannot join back without being invited in again, but the flaw in this system is, in my opinion, that users can just invite themselves back in with an alt account or by asking a friend to invite them. An option to only allow moderators/officers to invite kicked users back in would be useful. At the moment, the only option is to set the group to private which is not wanted in many cases.

As far as i know you can ban from group chat if the person is in the group chat at that moment
so if left a phishing link and left i guess then you cant ban from group chat.
and can ban from forum if the person made a post in discussions.
its pretty messed up

Yes, but this is in regards to kicking users from a group.
Here's an example for a case where this would be useful:
  • User joins chat, posts phishing link and leaves
  • Admins are unable to ban as the user left before they were able to ban them
  • User repeats this multiple times
If there was the option to ban users from a group, users wouldn't be able to rejoin the chat if it is set to private (i.e. group members only).

Sure it would be helpful. But why not just have moderators in the group every now and then. I'd argue that someone who posts a phishing link and leaves really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

People can easily dodge a kick or ban anyway by using a new account, which is I think part of the reason they don't allow banning from a public group.

But leaves a really bad image towards a group(s). (From my point of view "Lack of group moderation"). Also Moderators aren't mostly at the group chat 24/7 which still leaves us and other group member vulnerable. We are talking about repetitive spamming, a user who joins the chat multiple times just to post a link. Preventing or acting is still a better option than ignoring.

So there is no point banning people from group chat. So why do we got that option then?
Also I'd rather prefer banning someone once forever than repeatedly.

They can dodge it yes, but after having 2-3 accounts burned on a certain group without getting any new victims they sure get bored.

Right now they can just enter the chat, spam their phisher and leave > result might be 1 or 2 victims.
Few hour later, or the day after they repeat > more accounts stolen, and the next day they come back > again some accounts stolen.

The option to ban this account would piss them off, sure they could use an alt, but having your alts banned time after time gets boring and will stop this problem 100% sure.

Yes, but we're not discussing those, if this guy indeed posted a comment he'd be banned now yes. But as he joins the chat > spams his phisher and leaves before we can't ban him from the chat, he can continue to do so.

In the end the option to ban people AFTER they left the chat, or ban people from public groups will result in less accounts being stolen, I don't see why this is anything to argue about, Volvo should embrace it. Unless of course they don't care about their legit members and favour scammers/phishers but I like to believe they don't.

It's a good idea. I'm just saying there are workarounds until such time this idea is added. But I also wouldn't hold my breath.

Oh i remember demonstrating another type of spam in one of your group chats. There's another 'flaw' in groups system that makes harder to kick spammers from groups: user invited counts as group member even if he didn't accept group invite. He can join chats, he can talk, but he can't be kicked out of the group, because he's not on the members list. (well, at least it was last time i checked)

Just made dedicated threads about the relevant issues. Need support in hopes that Valve fix them.

Add ability to ban user from group after they've left
Remove non-moderator's ability to reinvite banned users to groups

I moderate the Ark Survival Evolved steam forums. We need this as soon as possible.
