In need of a good, possibly turn based strategy.
Hello everyone and sorry to bother you. I actually have had a hard time choosing where to make this topic. We should have a subforum for recommendations, after all what's not the best place to ask for them if not the online market itself?

Recently I and my friends started to get interested in turn based strategies. Something that we can play at a steady peace over days or weeks. It just started to feel a bit inconvinient for us to constantly re-host the game nad gather up everyone for each session.

To my dissatisfaction I did not menage to find a good solution to this problem. Obviously, I'm searching for a game that would have a play-by-email option, but maybe a bit more updated than the constant need to re-download the save manually.
The best would be a game were we could set up a private server that would host the game, and allow us to reconnect back into our seat when we have time, to play out our turn and then logout again. Do any of you know a game like souch? It does not matter if it's fantasy, sci-fi, simplistic or 4X, old or new. Just so it would be fun and convinient to play.

I'm aslo searching for any more interesting startegy games to look at. Things maybe even old that had something special in them. If you know a game with interesting quirks that are uncommon then please, post the name. Maybe you found something where the player can make his own race? Or a 4X where you can play a totall war on each planet separatly? Please, post the name if you do!

I would like to thank anyone who has found time to read and respon to this topic. Thank you.

I know of one game where you can set up a private dedicated server and play like that... it's in your library too. Civ V has a 'Pitboss' mode that sounds to be exactly what you need... here are the instructions for hosting and playing:

There are probably other games with similar modes but Civ V is the only one that I can think of.

Ah how could I forgot about Civ games! Pitboss was actually avaible back in Civ IV as well.
I had problems with runing V so I never found out about it, yes, thank you very, very much.

That's just exactly what I wanted~

Lately two of my friends have been playing

http://store.steampowered.com/app/289130/

Steam tags say it's turn based strategy, but since i don't play turn based strategy games i really don't know if it's a good one or not >.< Just thought i'd suggest it. :butterfly:

Medieval II: Kingdoms. While the base game does not have full multiplayer, the additional campaigns that come with Kingdoms and player created campaigns all allow you to play on the main map with another player hot-seat. And you can send saves to one another, via e-mail too, the game even has a password system so the other players can't mess with your progress.

Many of the campaigns even have co-op in mind, though the game doesn't go so well with head on competitive play since players can only auto-resolve attacks against other players, and auto-attacks are a little bit dodgy. You could have no way of losing, and still lose with auto-attack and since it's multiplayer you don't really have the opportunity to save scum ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ results like that.

good combinations for co-op are
Crusades: Templar Knights + Hospitaller Knights, or Turks + Egyptians
Teutonic: Lithuania + Poland (You would need to hack the game or complete a single player campaign to unlock Poland), or Teutonic Order + Holy Roman Empire (Same with Roman Empire)
Third Age (This is a mod, and a pretty bloody big one, but it's worth it): You have a lot of options here, but the obvious ones are Rohan + Gondor, or Mordor + Isengard

Hell, if you got Third Age, you could have an epic e-mail based Hot-Seat game with 6 or 7 players all picking the forces of light or darkness!
Gondor, Rohan, Eriador (The rangers!), High Elves, Silven Elves, Dorfs, Dale
Or Mordor, Rhun (Men of the East), Harad (Men of the South), Isengard, and Two tribes of wild orcs.

Dominions 4 might be worth a look. It does multiplayer by email and might be more like the sort of game you are looking for. It's a fantasy 4x although with more emphasis on combat than some. You give your armies their battle plans and then watch how the battlet turns out.

That's not Tolkinesgue fantasy with elves and orcs, by the way. It draws heavily on several world mythologies such as Norse, Japanese, Middle Eastern, Mesopotamian etc - as well as some Lovecraftian mythos.

Endless Legend is one of the things that i'm considiering, but maybe on a sale. It seems a little bit clunky with it's combat system. It might be one of the best fantasy civs, or one of the worst. I'm planning to give it a shot.

Wasteland 2 is one of the worts crpgs in a long time. Writing is awful, it's just monologues not dialogues. Author of the story had no idea how characters work and how humans converse. And then there's the way the gameplay evolves. After killing bandits you go on to kill...giant bugs. It's like a giant step downwards...If I would ever have patience to complete this game I could make hours long youtube videos on how it sucks, how much worse it's from any fallout and how much better any old crpg was. Even the first baldurs gate, that had tons of plotholes. Or maybe ultima 8, that one had one of the worst plotholes in it's series and yet felt more organic.

The multiplayer of Total war series is not really what we are looking for, sadly. Mostly becouse of how time-taking a single fight can be. But it is a very, very good game.

I must say that Dominions 4 title looks very interesting and pretty promising. I'm setting my eyes on it, and probably am going to test it out.

Thank you all for your entries, you are really making my lazy life more lazy, but aslo way more convinient. Glad you had that few minutes to spare.

You could also play Wakfu, it's a fantasy turn based strategy MMO, with 14 different races, it's on Steam now.
Or Final fantasy Tactics/FFT-A2 Grimoire of the Rift and the Advance Wars series if you have a DS/GBA

Hey Boomy,

Glad you posted this, I'm looking for the same solution myself. Need an extra guy? I love strategy games, but have a busy life where it can be hard to put in a 3-5 gaming session. A self-paced TBS would be perfect. Please feel free to hit me up if you're looking for extra guys: georgenielsen86 {a} gmail.com.
