Why monster game is a failure
Where should I start? Idea? Cool idea. Realisation of that idea? Awful.
Game is quite simple and yet developers made so many errors and left so many bugs and exploits. First of all, level skip is a bad idea, game simply can't keep up with skip spamming resulting in monsters left from previous level, lags and hangs. New players getting in team with skippers simply can't understand what's going on, do not get enough rewards and instakilled all the time. No fun here at all, you should have made an option to join standard game, or skipper fest. Second, you did not test it well with 1000 players. Lags, items being used with a 5-10 sec delay, dropped items never appearing in inventory, game stuttering and skipping stuff. And crashes, a lot of crashes. Game won't start with unknown error. Whole shop page hanging, not reacting to anything. Corrupted achievments log.
With a ssimple game like this to make all such errors - that's worst game of the year nominee for sure. Guys, I just can't understand. How you managed to break it so much? Sorry, but experience wasn't pleasant at all.

The main queries would be: -

1) Did anyone access the Steam sale page more often due to the Monster game ?
2) Did anyone buy games which they would not have bought because of the monster game ?
3) Do people have a more positive opinion of Steam because of the Monster game ?

For me the answers would be: -

1) Not necessarily. I might have spent more time looking at games to buy if I hadn't spent time faffing around with the monster game.
2) Not me. I think.
3) Definitely no. Monster game and GTA V were definite negatives on what I otherwise thought was a good sale.

S.x.

1) No, but also not less.
2) No. Maybe a good question would also be: Did the Monster game have any impact (positive or negative) on the amount of games being sold.
3) Yes and no. Yes, because they actually tried to do something special. No, because they really failed at it, even though they at least should have known about certainly a couple of inherent failures the game possesses. Regarding GTAV; if only they released the regular game with a 25% discount. The positive responses would have gone through the roof.

I also would like to note that I really enjoyed a couple of the avenues this thread has been taken to. It is always fun to learn about of perspectives you hadn't thought about. I may have come across a bit negative towards Steam in my ramblings, but I do appreciate the effort they put into making the Sales experience a bit more unique. Maybe they opted for this game as a way of giving some more spark to this period's sales, that frankly did feel a bit stale. And by stale I don't mean that there weren't any good deals, but due to a disappointing release schedule, there weren't that many new eyecatching games with a first time deal. Who knows?

Anyway, I think any game Steam would have created, would have been manipulated by groups of people. That is something that's just bound to happen and therefore it was extremely smart of them to cap the reward to just a simple badge beforehand. But in this case I think many more people were turned to using autoscripts just by the game not being fun to play. If next time they use a game that actually could even be considered a worthy addition to their sales catalogue, I think the prevailing opinion would be a much more positive one. Off the top of my head; a proceduraly generated -- less likely use of autoscipts and less boring -- game like spelunky, where the amount of treasure and defeated enemies would count towards the milestones. A good idea?

The problem with GTA V was that it WAS advertised in the UK on its own at 25% discount, marked at £38.98 down from £52.34 (or within a few pence of that). But it had NEVER been on sale for that higher price - certainly not for 28 days before going on sale. This was bluntly conning customers not savvy enough to know the pricepoint that GTA V normally retailed at - usually £30 - £40. The community rightly went up in arms despite the efforts of moderators to confuse the situation.

S.x.

Since this topic isn't about the Monster Game I'm closing it.

All though on a point on GTA5. They only discounted the higher priced package that had ingame money added to it.
