You, and ordinary Joe scientist shows up for work and performs science.
Except there are side effects that merge two dimensions(You might call them aliens but thats for another discussion). Fight your way through the game to eventually stabilize/lock the other dimension and even go there(for fun).
An interesting side note is that the science team will help you, but your own military is trying to hunt you down too.
It's a very old shooter franchise with an avid fanbase, likely because the company that made it technically still exists -- it's from Valve. Except that Valve doesn't really make games anymore.
