Final Fantasy Ultimate Collection (Polboot.exe) trying to install can't play game?
I just purchased the Final Fantasy XI game and tried downloading through steam. I have an icon that doesn't work. So I went back into my steam account and pressed play and now it is trying to upload something called Polboot.exe. It says it is from an unknown source. What the hell is this and why is steam trying to upload this program from an unknown source? It is confusing, and I am not sure what to do at this point. I noticed that the download seemed to be very short in time, making me think the game hasn't fully installed. Please help. Do I have to use this program to finish the install?

Seems to be for FFXI used for login, problem is there are virus that actually target that file to steal your account if you try to log in through it. So normally its fine, but it is targeted by people to steal your stuff and then sell your stuff.
Well I went ahead and ran this playonline viewer thing, as the Final Fantasy game I don't think ever downloaded from steam. I have this little world icon on my desk top and when I click on it it says "Target - The target shortcut is invalid". I did the registration on this Square Enix site through this Playonline program, and now I am stuck. I have no idea how to get the download for the game, there is nothing in the pop up box for the playonline viewer that tells you have to complete the download and start playing the game.

Ok that link doesn't help it just takes me back to this thread I posted.
From the thread.

Looks like this is on Valve's non-important issue list. If you are playing Final Fantasy XI and you bought it on Steam, you probably noticed something.

The Steam UI doesn't work.

There is a really simple fix that Valve isn't bothering to implement.

When Final Fantasy XI opens through steam it opens via a program called PlayOnline. The is Square Enix's central hub for launching the game and logging into the service itself. When the game opens using Steam, it opens through an executable called polboot.exe. All this program does is pass a command to open another executable called pol.exe and the executable change doesn't pass the UI properly.

The difference between the two executables is just one thing. The polboot.exe, which is found in the Final Fantasy XI folder, opens PlayOnline, found in the PlayOnlineViewer folder, and once the user logs into PlayOnline, there is a little crystal on the main menu which takes you to the Final Fantasy XI launcher.

If the user just opens pol.exe and logs in, the crystal is absent and the user has to click "Games" and then "Final Fantasy XI" to get to that same page.

So all the polboot.exe does is save the user a mouse click at the expense of the Steam UI.

Solution: Make the executable that Steam launches to pol.exe, found in the PlayOnlineViewer folder, instead of polboot.exe. The pol.exe calls the UI correctly and passes from PlayOnline to Final Fantasy XI with no issues.

The end user can make a non-steam shortcut and just add pol.exe in his steamapps/common/ffxi/Square Enix/PlayOnlineViewer folder and rename it to Final Fantasy XI in Steam. Although it won't record playtime it does broadcast to friends what you are playing and the UI works properly.
I really appreciate your response. I am a very non techy person so I really don't understand half of what you said...lol I went through the whole process on that polboot.exe and it took me to the Square Enix site and had me register. But every time I try to click on the game in steam it just pops up the viewer. There is no crystal or any instructions on how to install the game and get started. I am gun shy about running through my files on my computer since I am not that techy. Are you saying I have to find the playonline viewer folder and just rename it then put a shortcut to my desktop? Again, I just wanted to download the game and play it, didn't realize this would become a huge technnical headache.
I'm afraid I dont have the game so cant do a run through of what is suggested.

Perhaps you could ask in the games hub area for some help?

It does look a little slow in there though.
I can't even reach the Square Enix site for support, I keep getting a 404 code error. When I do get through it says it can't connect some kind of server error. I put in my chosen Game ID and password for that Viewer thing and it just doesn't work. It is so confusing and very non user friendly. I think at this point I just want my money back, jesus..
