Dead Island is a horror-themed game.
So are L4D, L4D2, and pretty much any other co-op "horror" games. They have the right theme and sometimes atmosphere and other elements, but it's nearly impossible to get the same fear experience from a multiplayer game as you can from a single player one.
Also please note: horror games can, in fact, be puzzle games/adventure games. What do you think Amnesia is? It's a stealth-horror, adventure puzzle game.
OP: Try Scratches, Alan Wake, the Penumbra series, Dead Space and Dead Space 2, the Darkfall triogy, Cryostasis, Darkness Within/Darkness Within 2, Barrow Hill and get a PS2 for the Fatal Frame series, Silent Hill series, Siren and a few others.
Best horror game ATM
All the "horror" games on Steam are pretty poor.
Knock Knock is rather interesting, though. Quite disturbing for a cartoony-looking game.
no, DS is not scary whatsoever.
I'm not saying its a bad game, I liked DS1 and 2. I didn't like 3 very much though. I just find it full of cheap jumpscares that you can easily anticipate.
