lol, I don't even think that genre exists any longer let alone a multiplayer game like that.
There are only a handful of turn based games any longer most don't have multiplayer at all.
Divinity: Original Sin, I believe is the only game that fits that description; it is in early access right now.
Castle Crashers is a sidescrolling with RPG Elements, up to 4 players.
Hammerwatch is a rogue-like with RPG Elements, up to 4 players.
There are a few other examples; but you won't get the "deep story" you're looking for with 4 people - to my knowledge it hasn't been done.
Borderlands 2 is an ARPG with a Gun Enviornment; decent story, but not in a fantasy setting with swords/shields, etc.
or wakfu . but well you have to get past the look if you dont like something being overly cartoony and its kind of old now aswell . also a mmorpg but its a tactics game so it is turn based but you have to move around . i think its f2p now (typical) . it had a subscription based system a while back
only things i can think of that sort of meet your criteria that havent been mentioned . dont know if either is on steam though
Update:
Not sure if multiplayer works, since publisher (Atari) bankruptcy.
