Power supplies generally have some sort of built in surge suppression. If the PC is shut down, the most a power outage could do is fry the PSU if there is a surge, like due to a lightning strike.

And if there’s no surge?

Generally, yes. Disk write errors are going to be the most common problem you face.

If you often get power outages then get some of those power supplies you plug your computer into which give you autonomy of like an hour, which allow you to finish what you are doing and then close your computer before the battery run out. I forget how they are called in English.

I think you mean UPS yeah it’s a good idea but I rarely get power outages plus I heard power outages make pc components life shorter its that true

There is a possibility of it, yes. It is always better to close a computer the way it is supposed to be, like about any other electronics.

The nice thing about UPS is that they also act as a surge protector. Surges are way more likely to cause you problems in this way than power outages.

It is all a matter of luck and probabilities. You could have a lot of outages and it never do your computer in, you might have only a few and you're done... You never know. I believe it might be more the matter of the current you get at your home to begin with but I'm no electrician. The quality of the wiring in your house probably also influence your chances. Like I just said, the fluctuation of current is more problematic than anything else.

Majority of the time it won't do anything.

It might cause a problem at some point.

But if you're doing an Bios Update and get an power outage you might just have bricked your motherboard.

That is the one time you do not want a power outage.

oh I see so how do I know if it harmed the pc? and do you think I should get a UPS?

9/10 your PC will be fine and reboots without issues.

It's that one time that you're doing something critical like a BIOS update or a major windows version update and your power cuts that ♥♥♥♥ hits the fan.

If you live in a first world country with only very occasional power outages it's not worth it for a PC.

If you have a lot of them then ofc a UPS might be interesting.

That's like expecting your PC to get damaged because you pulled the plug from the socket while the PC is turned off.

That's a definite possibility. The odds are very low but that's still a definite possibility.

But what type of damage will it be?

Hardware related. You could get an extremely small amount of damage which you will not notice at all until years later or it could downright fry something in your computer.

Again, the odds are extremely low. I'd like to stress the fact that any modern electronics are made with safeguards against this kind of thing. You have a way bigger chance to win the lottery than having your computer get damage from one single incident of this nature.

Oh so it’s really rare to happen but if it happened maybe I will notice the damage after years you mean it will effect the pc components lifespan in long term?
