In addition to starting the Steam client, I always open my profile using Chrome. Viewing my badge page showed the 'Play Game' button for the holiday sale.
I stopped the Steam client, renamed 'ClientRegistry.blob' and restarted the Steam client. I still see the 'Play Game' button on my badge page both via the Steam client and via Chrome. At least for me, the above solution did not work.
It's because historically, when a sale was on they would change the actual web site that is hosted for the store (lets call it storeindex.html). This meant that the actual web site was altered and after the sale was finished it was put back to how it was before.
These days, they have started creating an 'app' page for the sale (the same was that a game page is put together) and re-direct the store to that page. Because the badges page is set up to show the 'play game' icon for any app on that page, it shows it for the sale event.
They would need to add in some sort of exception along the lines of "If appno = 'xxxxx' then ignore, else show 'playgame' icon".
Except it wasn't there prior to 1 month after the sale was over. It just popped up after series of updates one day. So this is update caused not sale caused.
Nope not on my page, nor a lot of peoples pages. This isn't the only thread on this subject. Lots of us noticed it popping up a month after the sale was finished. And I check my badge page daily if not more. I noticed.
