Fake SSN?!?!?!!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!?
So, steam asks people when LIST(not sell, list) 200 items on the market, they ask them to fill out a form that makes you fill out your ssn. What will happen if you use a fake ssn? Will you get in trouble of some sort? Will you be able to change your ssn? I know some people dont feel safe giving it out to steam, as anything is hackable now, and still want to atleast list some items.

Im not saying i did nor didnt use a fake ssn. This is just like a warning to those who did use one or is planning on using one. Any answers for any of those questions is helpful.

Thanks!

social security number-the main thing of your whole life

The probably need it for tax purposes. If you geve a fake number it may keep you from getting paid for your listings until you correct it.

So you just dont get paid when you give in a fake ssn?

"I'm not saying I did nor didn't use a fake ssn" is akin to the "a friend of a friend" stories. Just makes you look like you did it. It certainly makes you look a lot more suspicious.

Using a fake SSN is considered fraud and is an arrestable offense that can carry jail time. If you can't supply one, then you probably shouldn't be selling more than 200 items a year. It is for tax purposes since your SSN has to be supplied to the government when you do your tax return. Only reason you can't supply one is either you aren't American at which point I have no idea what to tell you (ask Valve) or you're underage. If you're underage, then you have to get your parents to give you your SSN.

I know some people dont want to give away their ssn because they are sacred it might get stolen. Things are hackable these day. But if you dont make over $20k of sales, they wont submit it, is that correct or am i wrong?

They verify the information submitted, so it needs to match up.

I wrote that this is to be like a warning to people who did use a fake ssn or thinking about using a fake one

I don't think the info can be changed once submitted. Because once it's submitted they send off the information to be validated.

What can people do if they want to sell more than 200 items but they think that its not safe to give away their ssn?

Do you know if people can use a fake ssn and just sell below $20k so they wont get caught?

Matt has explained (up above) everything that you need to know. Now it's starting to sound like you want someone to tell you what you only want to hear.

How many time i gotta say this? This is for those who plan to use a fake or already used a fake ssn. I wanna help those people because i know some myself. As for Matt, he didnt say if your info get reported before you pass 20k.
Is it wrong to try to help?

Sorry if i sound mean.

The reason i ask if it gets reported is i see on other forums that it wont get reported unless you sell over 20 items and sell over 20k.
