The mouse/keyboard emulators Xpadder, Antimicro and Pinnacle would be great for that.

If you like the default layout of the game, go ahead and play with that, but Arma has a pretty large amount of control options, and you would need one of those programs to emulate most of the buttons.
Emulators like JoytoKey are good and will let you set all the buttons on the controller any way you want, but don't have the Set Selectors that those ones do, which doesn't give you as much freedom.

This is my profile in Antimicro(very similar to Xpadder) for Arma. It's not complete--there are a number of unused buttons and I'm sure DayZ will use different controls, but you should be able to get the idea and remap to meet you needs.

To put it simply, I use the LB and RB buttons as "set selectors" which change the button layout while they are held. Y is ENTER and A is SPACE(Jump/vault) normally, but when I hold LB, they become C(Stand) and Z(Prone) respectively.

My logic for LB(2nd Set[2nd Image]) is for additional movement options, so left/right on the stick become lean buttons, rather than L/R strafing. RB(3rd set[3rdImage]) is entirely for squad commands.

If you need more help, just ask.

im sure i will be asking soon enough. however for some reason i cant even download the software to install the drivers for the damn receiver anyway. something about a compatibility error which i dont understand why. bought my pc like 7 months ago brand new. and i tried to talk with a microsoft rep but they are freakin clueless
any advice?

Do you get an official receiver? If so, it should automatically install the drivers, plus have them on a seperate install CD.

As for your question, though, I think you are seriously overestimating the abilities of your controller here. You are not going to have a fun time trying to play DayZ on a controller. Not only has it not been designed with native controller support in mind (not to mention it's still in Alpha), but the volume of controls you need quick access to while playing exceeds the numbers of buttons on a standard 360 controller. I would recommend gettting to learn the mouse and keyboard ASAP, otherwise you'll be playing handicapped.

And do note, I'm not saying that as a, "PC master race, KB&M ruleeee", moron, it's just how it is. There are many PC games that can be played perfectly fine with a controller, DayZ in any form is not one of them and you'll end up wasting a lot of time trying to set it up.

Unfortunately I'm worthless with that. Like WOLFkraut said though, if it is an offical reciever, you should have been given the drivers for it.
If it's from a specific website, you might try to contact the customer support there as well.

If you took a look at the link to my work in progress profile for Arma, buttons are hardly an issue. I've been able to map every movement option Squad Command (numbers 1-10 and F1-5+ '~') and, while I haven't gotten there yet, treating the D-Pad buttons as set selectors as well will allow any item switch and map command with tons of options to spare.

Simply, using set selectors can basically give a ~12 button controller 100+ easily accessible options.

The only real problem that I(or probably anyone else using these advanced set selectors) faced was the lack of isolated context sensitive(On Foot/In Vehicle/Passenger etc.) control settings from within the game. Most commands carry over from On Foot(At least in the first Arma), and are nearly impossible to remap without botching other command types.

This thread was quite old before the recent post, so we're locking it to prevent confusion.
