I use those terms to describe the flawed arguments of others. My points stand and if you actually argue against my points you will receive an appropriate response.
I will note that you should take your own advice as snide ad-hominem attacks do not bolster your position.
That is not an 'analogy' so you may wish to improve your own 'ten dollar vocabulary'.
While one could spend the time to discuss those, they're not relevant to the discussion at hand.
If 'money making' is a point of contention then ALL companies are guilty of it. Because all for-profit organizations are 'money making schemes' by your incredibly broad definiton. People bandy such weasel words about, but then do not realize how the actual application of the term would essentially encompass all commerce based ventures.
It is the same flawed premise that all 'marketing' campaigns are 'cash grabs' taht the OP posits. They are broad mis-used terms that essentially apply to all forms of commerce using the loose 'criteria' put forth. In such a braod terminology, Mcdonalds Monopoly game is a 'cash grab'.
If you are going to bandy about such terms at least use them in instances of utterly egerigous violations. Such as I described where a Chinese MMO gave out a daily 'reward' to users but only to the TOP user who purchasd teh MOST keys at the end of the day, thus creating a vicious purcchasing cycle to become the 'top' person. Nothing in the current system even remotely comes close to resembling something this egregious. Especially when users can craft badges without spending a single penny, assuming they are willing to trade items for what amounts to time exploiting trade arbitage.
I've spent literally zero dollars so far on the sale across my primary and 2 alts. I'm simply voting right now. At the end of the sale my alts would have spent zero dollars Even my primary can 'in theory' spend zero dollars and get enough cards to craft a single badge (though it is unlikely I will spend zero dollars on the sale simply because of the deals, not becase I need cards) Or I could trade and tehn craft, again spending zero dollars. In none of those situations do I have to spend any actual money to craft a badge. It may not be 'optimal' however users may craft badges without spending any money at all.
I can't even.
All that being said, the summer camp promotion isn't the "cash grab." That would be the entire Steam marketplace system; Valve is getting a ridiculous profit just from allowing the market to exist, cutting in developers on the profits to encourage production of goods, and dangling a (mostly) meaningless carrot to get people to participate. However, I can't condemn them for their actions when I see all the "2:1" deals people think are fair for trading cards.
At least there is a lotto.
When Origin gives out free games to everyone, it's just like "Oh my gosh they're evil! They're just trying to lure everyone in to use Origin!" But when Valve gives out a couple free games, they're automaticly angels apparently.
EA has an ulterior motive to giving out free games. Obviously they want to bring in more customers. If they were in Valve's position, I doubt they would give out their "precious" games for free.
EA said it themeselves many months ago, discounted games devalue games. (which implies free games will most assuredly devalue harder) They of course later recant this stance when they realized that origin needs more active gamers.
But hey if you don't like it, as a consumer, you get to speak with your wallet. Don't buy anything, sell your cards for voting and come out on top. I fail to see why this is worth getting worked up over.
Also if any of you moaning about this promotion do happen to win I fully expect you to turn down the prize, as not to be asscoited with this dirty, dirty cash grab. It just would be the moral thing to do.
So because your chances (and everyone elses) are low then they should just can the whole thing. If people some how think that crafting a lot is increasing their chances then that's on them. A fool and their money are soon parted. If you're smart enough to see the angle (which isn't hard to see at all), just avoid it. Complainging here just comes off as sour grapes.
Assuming one team wins every day you only need to craft 1 badge a day to be eligible. That's 9 badges since voting will give you one. Trading/selling will easily give you the rest for no cost and in reality it's made even easier since buying games in the sale gives you free cards and crafting and winning give free cards.
i mean seriously.. in previous years during sales you just got to enjoy the great sales. Even once trading cards came along, previously you only got the xp for crafting them.
This year there is also a sliiiiiim chance you can get 3 free games. Last year. The year before the year before, there was /no/ chance that 30 people a day would get 3 free games.
i don't get the whiners.
It's like ... we all buy groceries at the store every day anyway. If one week the grocery store was like out of everyone who buys every day this week.. 1 of you will get a free $25 gift card to the store. Why would people complain? SURE the chance is slim... but so what? It's nicer than nothing at all.
i am pleased with a chance to get some free games, even if small. It's more generous than previous sales anyways. :) and certainly more generous than any other recent sales i've seen on other sites where there's no chance to get any games for free for just participating in the sale as you normally might.
IDK whats wrong with the world, they try and add something a bit of fun with a chance to win free games to the usual sale and an entitled minority bite thier hand off about the "odds".
If you're spending extra money crafting badges thinking you're going to win free games you're being a dumbass. Thats not how it works. Think of it less like gambling (where the odds are always against you) and more like a free raffle.
As a side note lets not forget what happened when valve gave away L4D for free during the winter sale. Things crashed, people couldn't use the market and people ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and complained a lot.
