Why are emoticons so tiny?

Most of the time I have no clue what they're supposed to be when people post them in chat.

They're ant-sized.

I mean, why are they so small anyways?

I don't understand why Valve/Steam did them this way.

The actual size of them in your inventory and in the Market are good sized but when you post them in chat they get downsized.

Why even buy/use them?

I'd actually like to use them in chat if they were normal sized.

Why would that matter?

I'd think that it's more important for people to actually know what they are than for them to be so tiny and unrecognizable that they match up perfectly with the text.

Emoticons that are way bigger than the text are kinda ugly.

If you can't make out what an emoticon is, that probably means it was designed badly.

Honestly, I think they should be a bit bigger. But I also think they shouldn't be huge and annoying.

The only way they could be bigger without screwing things up would be if the text was also bigger.
