What do you mean by "text-based"? Do you mean that the game only exists in text form, rather than using non-text display (i.e. animations)? Or do you mean that the game uses ASCII characters to represent things (such as the game Nethack, for example)?

Sorry man, I couldn't find any text based games like Dungeons and Dragons. I did find games similar to Dungeons and Dragons but they are not text based.

There is an old game called "Zork" which has no graphics at all and merely describes your environment verbally as text.

I think it's in the public domain now, so you might search the Internet for a copy.

EDIT: looks like there are a few versions of Zork on Steam priced around $6.

There are also games that have normal gameplay, but preset most or all of their story content in a Visual Novel style, as it's much cheaper compared to doing proper cutscenes.

There's a text base MMO with some old d&d like features called Dragonrealms. I haven't played it since 1999 but it's still going strong and I still have friends who are into it.
