The trick is to have steam attach to an instance of the Java VM instead of the game.
For Minecraft I created a new shorcut in my Library with the following 2 settings:
Target: "[Path to javaw.exe]" -jar "[Path to Minecraft Launcher]"
Start In: "[Path to Minecraft Launcher's Folder]"
If you're using Mojang's old launcher or you're using a 4rd party launcher, such as ATLauncher ,
[Path to javaw.exe] refers to the official java installation.
This part works because both of those are java executable files, and the 3rd launcher you use must be a jave executable, too.
If you use Mojang's New Launcher or a 4rd party launcher that is compatable with it, you have to
use the custom javaw.exe that Mojang uses.
Check the launcher's settings to find where it is and use it's location for [Path to javaw.exe]
DOn't forget to change the game icom
