Lots of Bans
I've been seeing a lot of bans recently. I was looking through some posts by some people who were banned they seemed fine.

What are the criteria to get banned?

I just got off a ban for a year. I usually last a few days before the next. I try to be respectful and usually aggro people are everywhere, but I get banned. I think its a different east coast culture, millennial culture, internet culture, and everything else that cant figure life out. Probably for saying stuff like this, but I could care less. I watched these mods hired as teenagers what was it 20 years now? They were immature then and ran amuck, and it took them quiet a while to mature. At this point, its all pretty systematic. I dont feel bad or weird at all if I get banned. I feel bad and weird for people who get caught up in fighting on here or making it their life.

dont be reported..

thats it. people will hate me for saying it but most of the time it will be like 1-4 people over a disagreement who run to the report button when its inappropriate and im amazed i havent gotten false flagged over nonsense agian already.

my last 1 month false flag i replied to a guy and inverted and mirrored his post apparently doing a mirror post thats inverted is bannable but not the guy who made the off topic post that was made to pick fights because no one reported him but those like me have stalkers who report us ever time we they see our post. there was half a dozen posts i could at least understand if you stretched the rules as far as you could for the false flag false ban but that one they used i never would have thought they would pick that one. agian it was just a mirror inverted reply with qoute...

I was looking more at the general atmosphere of the comments than a specific one.
People can get banned for one inappropriate comment.

It probably is not ment to be clear as to avoid people to game the system.

That's what I'm thinking, but an extreme version of this is to put people in prison at random, because it's possible they did commit a crime, or, to put them in jail and never tell them a real solid reason why, or allow this crime for some people but not for them. It keeps people guessing, which creates and extremely hostile environment, not to mention the eventual demise into chaos by the mods themselves.

Imagine walking outside of your house, not knowing any of the rules. Is wearing shorts illegal? Is it punishable by execution after one time, or worse, after three times? When you get accustomed to it, that's when the hammer will fall?

Systems like this seem inherently a little dangerous for everyone involved. Outside the obvious, people have gotten bans for no logical reasoning that could be shared with anyone else, except the moderator themselves.
false equivalence.

if you join a community the onus is on you to get to know the rules.

also, there are the "written" rules and then there is the "in the spirit of the rules"

best rule of thumb is don't be awful and you won't get a ban of any appreciable length.

That's quite alarming. I would expect a pattern of behavior rather than a misstep. What are some of the criteria? I've gotten the idea somewhere that it's not as clear cut as any official instructions, and the official instructions seem rather vague in some regards.

I've been around Steam since 2007. I really would not like to get banned, so I am weighing whether I need to voluntarily leave and visit only when absolutely necessary. I am thinking this since there are bots reporting comments everywhere on the internet these days and some AI seems to be banning comments based on words and no context on other sites.

Don't be an toxic a-hole (like most of the regularly banned people are) and you won't get banned.

Most of the banned users are repeat offenders that never learn.

Who definition of toxic a-hole are we using? ... because I can guarantee you not everyone sees them the same.

Here's the more likely answer ... run into the wrong person or run into the person here looking to get rid of others first. Also look out for those who use feelings here.

I do agree with you on one point for sure ... I spend very little time here as possible knowing that there are people here who sole purpose is to annoy people into getting rid of them or just looking for an excuse to get their jollies off by reporting others.

It doesn't stop me from getting banned. All you have to do is run into the wrong person around here and it is report time.

How do I know all this? Because when I get a ban I don't mind admitting when I am wrong. This last time I refused to.

In any case at least you know the mods are doing their jobs, correct OP?

Most of the banned users are repeat offenders that never learn.

Considering what the modern audience considers Toxic A-hole, that gives no parameters at all. It means people will get banned for whatever reason the moderator feels like that day. So if the mod is an insomniac, simply waking up with 2 hours of sleep can result in productive community members getting banned for a mild-mannered ribbing?

Mild-mannered ribbing?

That says don't insult or harass people. Period. This includes Steam personnel and other developers.
