How old can the previous post be before you consider it a necropost to participate in the thread?
How old is too old these days? I don't want to annoy people but sometimes I can be a little slow to catch on to social things.

Come to think of it didn't we used to tell new people it was better to post in an existing thread than a make a new one? I remember some meme video about it even.

But...I mean, I know nobody likes a necropost right? I get that so I guess I'm just updating my mental steam etiquette rules.

I'm not even sure I am asking in the right place, I don't use the forums often and when I do its usually game-specific. Kinda nervous to post this actually.

Just apply common sense. If the subject has been concluded, don't add to it.
A necro isn't really about age - think about it, necro is referring to the thread being dead and then a new post bump it but doesn't really "revive" it.

If the post adds new, relevant information and the discussion can continue, then the age of the thread doesn't really matter (not a necro)

If the post bumping the thread, after the discussion has died, adds nothing then that's a necro.

there's no such thing as necro.
it's an imaginary thing invented by forum trolls who don't have a life outside that forum.

spam is a thing, don't do that.
bumping is a thing, don't do that.
when people say nerco, they mean one of those two, but focus on the thread age and disregard the content.

steam forums simultaneously:
encourage people to use the search
have a dreadful search tool
punish you for replying to a thread you find with the search tool
punish you for making a new thread if a similar one was made before
making comments on old threads from 2015, older, or even maybe a year or 2 old, is not needed and the info/issues are very much irrelevant by then, as things change in the course of those being posted... with features upgraded, new features added, issues fixed, ect..

also no one wants to click a thread and find that its something from 2012/ect... with people asking questions to people who may possibly not even be using that account anymore or steam in general, or info thats irrelevant in the current date, ect..

i think those things should be auto locked after like 6 months of no comments (which saves users, moderators time not dealing with it), but thats me and according to the poster above, we are trolls for not liking threads resurrected for no reason.

"shrugs"

it's random
and sadly people forgot how to use a forum

an "old" information or thread doesn't mean obsolete. but these ridic mods or simple users are just better bots so yeah.
I thought necro posting was revamping really old threads with nonsense unrelated to the original topic

Guess I am wrong?
Nowadays people bump complete guides instead of giving points while giving points to clowns instead of giving them the talk. It went downhill years ago I'm afraid.

The search function is there, and not just on steam. But I guess this relates to two other issues like "being seen" for no apparent reason.

What boggles the mind is people who start digging for years or even decade old threads ON PURPOSE. Is this what lead pipes does to people or what?

@Qbert it's part of the problem.

post history does seem to be used as a tool to paint others in a bad light, thats for sure, i wont speculate on the other stuff.

The last task for the Community badge was to post on the forums, which led to huge spam.

They replaced that task for, "search the Steam discussions." This leads to a bunch of necros because people just assume that they also should post in said necro for it to register as completed.

"Posting for Steam Badge do not exist anymore."

https://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/1/359543951697587218/

Getting users to engage with the community these ways created a monster.

Don't get me started on the task to review a game for the Community badge or the many store events Valve held over the years that also had a task to review games you just played, leading to more review spam, just to get a badge.

:winterbunny2023:
ya, their ideas tend to lead to spam being a major factor, even worse when its reviews :cqlol:

reviews here are horrible, nothing but spam inflating scores/ratings.

@cSg|mc-Hotsauce Some Linux-centered forums have the opposite issue where threads get locked after <7 days of no activity which just leads to more issues than what it's trying to solve. Because if a bug stays for weeks or even months, well guess what.

And mods don't merge threads or reopen em because they arent really mods and/or rely on some trash forum backend.
One forum I am a member of there is a rule that say do not bump a topic where the last reply is a year ago. It just depends on whoever the moderator is that sees the topic.
If they cared about the age of the post, but don't want to lock the thread, they should just implement a new feature that causes new replies to old threads to NOT bump them - no issues with threads being locked, no issues with bumping - solves both issues...
then they can go further and make it something like 3 consecutive new replies by unique users within a week of the last post causes a bump

There is no real Answer because the paid Mods are braindead and dont seem to follow any actual Pointers.
Like 2 Weeks ago they closed a Thread that has multiple posts a Day, merely because the Thread was started about 9 Months ago, the last 3 posts at the Time the Copy&Paste&Lock was handed out, were less than 5 hours old.
I guess its both a lot more subjective than I thought and not just me then
