I don’t know enough about the Steam Deck whether you’d be able to get non-workshop mods for some games but you can put Windows in it. Don’t know if you’re willing to go through that much trouble.
Don't cripple it with windows.
The Steam Deck has plenty of methods for playing non-steam mods and games. Even with the linux rootspace set to read only, it can run almost anything through Bottles and Proton and the game launchers in the flathub.
Playstation: censoring everything and you lose all your games every generation shift
Steam Deck: Portable, can dock to use as a PC, can play on TV, can use games you buy on multiple devices. When you upgraded devices, your games go with you. Etc.
Otherwise you are better off buying a ROG Ally or a Lenovo Legion Go as they offer far better game performance and can also be used as a desktop pc without the hassle of Linux.
I would look up comparison videos and see the benefits of all the 3 handhelds.
Do you have PC already, is it portable, do you want a portable PC, do want it to be handheld?
I wouldn't bother with console due to everything just coming to PC.
But if you don't have a good PC, and want a PC that portable, then yes it can be worth it, if got extra cash, maybe consider a laptop instead, but if it must be handheld then check the other brands that completing again Steam deck. Reason I suggest laptop is because can get much greater performance for couple hundred dollars more.
If you're not into PC, just looking for plug & play, to only play games nothing else, then sure get a console, I suggest PS5, but get whatever you want really.
There pros, and cons between PC, and consoles and pros from PC outweigh the console often, unless it's only to one thing to play game, and nothing else, then pick whatever.
Otherwise? Depends. If you travel a lot in general it's quite useful. I certainly didn't regret buying one when it released.
I use it to play Flatout 2 and emulator games.
You have to be online all the time, just to use it..
No internet, no game…
Totally useless outside the home.
