pc using xbox 360 wireless controller d-pad stopped working in steam
I use a wireless xbox 360 controller with a usb receiver for my pc. after a stream did an update the d-pad will not work in any steam app. It works fine in windows, any non-steam game so it is not a controller / windows issue, it is steam. I have checked all controller settings but steam don't see the d-pad inputs from the controller

I also have the same controller rig-out and a similar problem although, so far, its limited to the D pad and inventory. Same as yourself I've checked everything and now at a complete loss on how to proceed tbh. I was/am considering purchasing a new controller but what? Very little seems to work well with Steam apart from the Xbox! The comforting thing is that, if its happening to us, we won't be alone for sure ;-)

Get a wired one and you shouldn't have any issues, my controller works just fine. About Steam Input, don't enable it unless you need it (in games that don't have native controller support).

I hate wired but its a heck of a lot cheaper and would, I assume, update automatically [which I have a feeling may be specifically my problem as I've not done it ... for years ..... and have no idea where the wire is now!]
However, before spending money I will do what you suggest and see if it helps - thank you
Check controller options ensure these two are enable for Xbox, and generic controller.

If the game has issue with Steam input for controller, and game has it own controller support, you can open game per settings with Steam, view game from library, right click on it > properties > controller > disable, now it will use game own controller support.

Otherwise ensure controller layout isn't mess up for steam, visit game via library > right click game > properties > controller > edit layout, and ensure things are correct please note keyboard inputs, and controller inputs are not the same such as dpad, and arrows, the A, X, Y, B, and etc as they have their own commands for controllers input.

BRILLIANT: Now I can see exactly what's going on and yes, its down to steam, so have now disabled steam input and hopefully this will sort it out ....... THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH xxxxxx
ps: I may well get another [new] xbox anyway .... and will keep the bloody thing updated .... but I take note of what you have said and will remember :-)

Same thing tried 1000 things to fix this.. nothing is working.
Dpad is perfectly fine.. just not in Steam.
It was the last Steam update that shredded everything. I hope that after the next one everything will work as it did before.

I'm in the same boat as everyone else here. A recent Steam update broke xbox 360 controllers, I found the best option is to disable steam inputs in your game properties and hope the game supports raw xbox 360 inputs (which most should).

Hopefully this thread counts as a bug report and it gets fixed next patch.

I managed to fix this by going to Steam/Settings/Controller then go to Xbox Extended Feature Support Driver and clicking uninstall. My PC rebooted and the dpad worked again.

Can confirm this worked for me, d pad not recognised as an input in Steam but after uninstalling and a restart it now recognises the d pad input. The option to reinstall the Xbox Extended Feature Support stays there as well so you're not losing anything permanently.

I'm having the same problem with an 8bitdo M30 controller specifically over bluetooth. All buttons work except the dpad. Dpad works while plugged in but my only usb a-c cable is very short. The controller exhibits this behavior in x-input and d-input modes. I was able to solve it by using the controller in Switch mode. It seems like this effects X-input and D-input, IE microsoft, exclusively

This fixed it for me too, thanks :)
