Even now we still get threads begging for free games, items or even points.
I don’t think giveaways are against the rules, there is a whole megathread with people giving away games. Unless we are talking about "do this to get a free thing".
Giveaways are not against the rules, I've had a few people report my thread where we give away keys and it was even closed once by accident. Support re-opened it and confirmed a giveaway where you aren't asking for anything in return is perfectly fine.
