They count on the theory, that most of us are too dumb to install an emulator and the app. Or use a real cell phone.
To install this, you have to get the auth through your landline, to init the android app with that number.
But I don't think, that is is very smart, to type your steam login into an open android emulator, that is a risk on itself. So I didn't do it. ;)
The authenticator is not being forced on everyone.
Just edit this to say, because steam claim I am using a new browser (again , I'm not) I have just been banned from market transactions for seven days, which of course takes me in to the new regs - the 15 day hold. So thats my market trading/selling over, fini .
Someone else mentioned this earlier in this thread but it sounds a bit dodgy to me but thanks for the advice, it's appreciated (if you were talking to me and not op) I'm sure I will get over the market after all it's games that I'm here for, everything else is just a side event.
It was to whomever. Mainly to OP about his post. But I use it pretty much everyday. Not dodgy at all. I was skeptical but it's not a bad option if you don't like to use phone/don't have one that supports the app.
It's partly that but also it feels a bit distasteful the way they have sort of stealthed this in bit by bit. I'm of the opinion that we are only now getting to what this is all about and when they first started these new security measures they already knew that this was where it was leading. Notice that there is no new security when you are paying them for something which is surely just as risk ridden as trading on the steam market. We wouldn't want anything to interfere with giving them money now would we.
