Steam's 20th Anniversary seemed so...
...lackluster. Don't get me wrong, Steam (and by extension, Valve) have been a HUGE part of my life during a good chuck of that 20 years. And I'm thrilled they're still a power to be reckoned with in this garbage age of corporate greed. Valve seems to be doing their best to keep the power in the hands of the players and creators and staying out of their way.

That being said... the "celebration" just seems so... meh. 20 years is a massive achievement in this realm, particularly in an era when people's attention spans are near nil. I did enjoy the timeline that they put together. It was fun remembering where I was during each year, and seeing all of the games I either had or were released during the earlier years. But, I'm left with this hollow feeling of "that's it?" Honestly, I don't know what I would have expected if I had known prior to the date, but having a timeline with some quirky puns and call-outs to pop culture moments in those years would have been near the bottom of the list of expectations. It's just sad to me that the days of the fun community activities and games are just... gone. This was a great opportunity to take a chance on something a bit more fun than "Hey, guys, check out this extra mediocre sale that is between the big summer and winter sales, which will also be mediocre!"

I don't know... maybe I'm expecting too much? I mean, they did go balls out on the Deck, which likely drained a lot of their creative resources for a while, but I still feel like this could have been more fun. Either way, congrats Steam, Valve, and our great Lord Gaben on 20 years!

It was just a brief wiki historia and all their own titles on sale. That's it.

And a special years of service badge for those who created their accounts the first year.

...yay...

wow... so bad.. I was expecting to get every game on Steam for free - anything less than that is just low effort.
The thing that's so funny about the responses so far is kind of the point I'm getting at. I'm not complaining that it's bad. I'm more sad that the energy that Steam used to put into these elaborate events seems to have gone. I didn't need or even want "free stuff" or some kind of epic sale. It just seems so... disconnected to point out a pretty monumentous event with something that feels relatively low effort.

It is what it is; just thought I'd put my feelings out there. The fact that people feel the need to be snaide about my sharing feels a bit weird, but no big deal.

Those events also always lead to lots of exploits, complaints, whining, etc.

I think it's plausible that Valves data shows that those events didn't actually enhance or cause sales.

Personally I don't miss them. They were ok, I guess.
hello what happened ?
I miss stuff like saliens, corgi racing, etc
At least we didn't read a new notification like: "Dear users, Google Chromium requires DDR5 RAMs to function, so Steam won't work in those systems with DDR4, DDR3, DDR2 anymore from now on. Be sure to upgrade your systems to DDR5 to be able to play the games in your Steam library. Or go to the forums and rant there whole day like Win7 users".

Valve should have released Legacy and Modern versions of Steam a while ago.

What they should have done is give customers free old versions of steam skins.. of all the different years.

They would have been raved to the hills on how great they are..
