Game developer previously banned from Steam makes a return
Zonitron/Silicon Echo are back.

They were previously banned from Steam for posting nearly 200 low quality asset flips across 15 different accounts. They have now found a new home on Epic Games as "Bearbones Crew", with some of their old titles that were removed from Steam appearing there.

This shows Epic's dedication toward hand-curating a store for quality games, maintaining a high standard unlike some other game stores. Thank Tim Sweeney, who back in 2019 said, "We are going to maintain a reasonable quality standard for games,It'll be open to games of all sizes, but not the junky asset flips or shock controversy games that are built just to make noise. PC is an open platform; there are lots of stores, so I don't feel like any particular store has a moral obligation to carry low quality or highly controversial projects."

Now we're just waiting for all those savings a lower cut provides to get passed along to the customer... Aaaaany day now.

Hypothetically true. but in reality, yeah. It has yet to be seen. There's no joke so bad that at least one person didn't think it was funny.

I know its hard to imagine that there's a an ocean of huiman likes and dislikes, preferences and enjoyments that exist beyond your sphere, but yeah such things exist.

FOr those who produce entertainment its basically a numbers game. Is the audience lucrative enough and can you keep your costs low enough to get a decent ROI?

This has nothing to do with "my sphere". For instance, Postal 3 was so bad that the devs removed it from Steam. Even them knew the game was trash. So yeah, no one really enjoyed it.

According to the article, the game got bricked by the DRM server going down, then delisted.
Frankly, I don't appreciate how unreliable DRM servers are.

I’d guess it’s something of a combo of both.

DRM servers died, and RWS (postal owners) didn’t think it was worth the time or trouble to fix given how hated it was.

Assuming they could do something about the DRM, fair point.
Isnt this a reversal of what Tim said back in 2019?

"We'll have a quality standard that doesn't accept crappy games," he said. "We'll accept reasonably good quality games, of any scale, whether small indie games to huge triple-A games, and we'll take everything up to, like, an R-rated movie or an M-rated game. A GTA game would be fine to us, but Epic's not going to distribute porn games or bloatware or asset flips, or any sort of thing that's meant to shock players. The PC's an open platform and if we don't distribute it in our store you can still reach consumers directly."

Oh, It's not a reversal because potato potato.

But it's not like anyone couldn't see Epic would follow Steam's steps in allowing devs to self publish in their platform years ago:

Tito Shivan eredeti hozzászólása:
Eventually Epic will face the same Issue Steam had before Greenlight and Steam Direct. Every gate becomes a bottleneck and no one is infallible guessing what of the things in your access queue is going to be the next big thing.

I remember when he said PC gaming was dead and console was the future, circa 2008.[news.softpedia.com]

Timmy eredeti hozzászólása:
Yesterday's PCs were for people that were working and later playing games, even if those games were lower-end ones. There will always be a market for casual games and online games like World of Warcraft. But at the end of the day, consoles have definitely left PC games behind.

Years later, PC gaming is huge, and Steam rises unopposed and is now a juggernaut. Tim is kicking himself and trying to undo that decision. (Too little too late Tim-tim.)

The folks at Steam NEED to increase the admittance fee to at least $250, if not $400 or $500, for devs that wish to put their games on here. That, along with adding several or more checks and balances beyond just signing your name and giving evidence that you are an actual company. :steamfacepalm:

Tim is an unscrupulous businessman above all else. He'll gladly lie like he breathes as long as he thinks he'll get money out of it, and his idea of success seems to be "I'll do the opposite of what Steam does, that will work!"

Ergo: He'll talk all about quality over quantity when Steam is dealing with shovelware issues, but when steam actually takes action against shovelware, he's suddenly the one taking in the shovelware guys with open arms and speaking of quantity and freedom.

Ultimately that will just slow down the process or make it more inaccessible for actual indie devs.

The floodgates are open at this point, and they really can't close them again.

THIS SO MUCH! Timothy Sweeney has and still is going down a bad path for Epic. SHAME ON THEM FOR REMOVING THE OLD UNREAL TOURNAMENT GAMES FROM THE STORE!

I've thought about this, and it makes sense to a degree. It has to be high enough that asset flippers stand little to zero chance of making their money back, (Thus removing all incentive to even post that low-effort asset flip.) while not being so high as to price out poor indies who are actually serious about their game and have been slaving away in their basement subsiding on instant ramen. Maybe $400 - $500? A little more? There's a careful balance there.

He had Tweeted that crypto stuff all seems to be varying degrees of a scam. Then Valve banned crypto games, and instantly he announced that Epic was welcoming crypto games with open arms.

At this point anyone from Valve could say that they do not pee their pants, and Timmy will walk onstage with urine-soaked trousers to announce that peeing your pants is the best thing since the invention of the silicon transistor.

All that "crap" entering a store is largely irrelevant.

Steam learnt it and Epic copied Steam's homework.

My point was more on “steam can’t really change the inflow of low quality games at this point”, rather than “they’re a problem” or “they are overwhelming the store”.

Like they are usually obviously low quality and it’s obvious from miles away, and they’re so cheap and short anyone who buys them can easily refund them.

Perhaps you misunderstood, maybe due to the sarcasm. This was not a positive thing for Epic. It demonstrates hypocrisy.
