Story-based game recommendations?
Recently I discovered a genre of video games called "interactive films". From what I've heard, interactive films are basically video games that have a bigger focus on story than gameplay. Some of these games have the story-richness of movies but allow interactivity from the player via quick-time events and branching paths. I only played one of these interactive films called Heavy Rain which I won't go too indepth on because it's a game you should experience without any spoilers. I really enjoyed my time with Heavy Rain; it had an emotional story, down-to-earth characters, gorgeous visuals (for the time at least), a beautiful orchestral soundtrack and a narrative where your choices truly matter. Despite some flaws such as an awkward control scheme, sub-par voice acting and some... questionable writing decisions, I really liked playing this game.

After playing Heavy Rain, I wanted to play more games from this genre because I just find the concept of having control over your character's actions in a story to be really cool. However, I had some trouble deciding what to buy because I only have enough money in my Steam wallet for like one game. I also have a lot of other games from a variety of genres in my backlog so I don't want to add multiple games to the list that I'll probably never play. So I wanted to ask you Steam users for your story game recommendations. I want to hear your favorite story-based games that I should play, preferably ones that have a branching narrative.

Wolf among us
The Quarry
Tales from the Borderlands (the first one, the second really didn't need to exist)
Fahrenheit - Indigo Prophecy

I actually heard that Bandersnatch is kinda like a choose-your-own adventure film so it is what I'm looking for.

You can look for games with the tags "Story Rich". If you don't mind choose-your-adventure type i.e. no QTE, combat, puzzles and whatnots, then you can look for "FMV" or "Walking Simulators".

For FMV-type, you can look for the publisher, Wales Interactive. Just type Wales Interactive into Steam's search box.

For walking sims, you can have The Vanishing Of Ethan Carter, Firewatch, What Remains Of Edith Finch.

Road 96 is being talked about a lot recently for its choice-matters branches.

For my personal favourite story-based game, it's L.A.Noire. Janky due its age (and having to deal with Rockstar's Social Club) but I felt like a corrupt cop in LA Confidential.

I would recommend Detroit as it is outstanding in player choices and the impact they have on the story, including flow charts. However the PC version is so trash. It is a literal gamble as it may or may not run properly on your system.

What other platforms is Detroit available on?

Well ♥♥♥♥. I unfortunately don't have a Playstation 5 or any other Sony console for that matter so I guess I'll give the PC version a try. I do have a moderately powerful PC so I just hope Detroit is at least playable, I don't care if I have to play it in a lower resolution or performance.

There is a playable demo of the game available so give that a try.

One of the best

I just played the demo for Beyond. I really like the premise of a paranormal entity being attached to a human being. I might buy the full game during the next Steam sale since it's a little out of my price range as for now, I can only afford a game that's $15 at the max.

I finished Beyond for the first time a few months ago and really enjoyed it. I'd say Heavy Rain and Detroit are the better titles overall but they're all really well-polished experiences that offer a great balance between interactive gameplay and movies. The Walking Dead is a remarkable experience too and can be got very cheap in the deep sales.

There are also these worth considering that follow a similar balance:-

These games seem pretty interesting. I've heard that Telltale has made a lot of great games though out of all of them The Walking Dead is the one that is praised to high heaven. I will totally get that game since it's the most appealing and is in my price range.

In all fairness and with full transparency the above is a game I developed. But it does have a pretty cool 100hour storyline in the "Decimation" with a lot of humor. It's solely for PC.

There's a SEVEN day demo if you can find the Download Demo button on the Steam page, which apparently should be a Steam Achievement all by itself.
