Steam no longer loads minimized to taskbar but instead brings up the Client
I have always had steam load on windows startup and it has always loaded minimized to task bar. But now i assume after the update it will open the client page every time steam is loaded. So every time i boot my system if i want steam to run on the side then it opens the client to a page rather than going to my desktop. Yes i know i can check dont load steam on windows start up but that is not the problem. Its the opening of the client every time steam is loaded.

Annoying as hell!
No fix for now it seems, if this was intentional and it won't be fixed I'm gonna leave Steam for good.

Same problem here, and the same feeling about it. I don't know if this is intended to put ads in my face or similar, but my response will be to turn Steam off.

You can make Steam start up minimized like before with a command in registry editor.

First make sure you have auto start enabled.
Open regedit and go to
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Find the entry called Steam, right click and edit it.
At the end of the line add:

-minimized makes it start minimized. No clutter on your screen on start up.
-vgui sets it to use the old UI from before the update.

So the full value data line in my case says:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.exe" -silent -vgui -minimized

... and don't change your steam settings afterward as it resets the change xD

Before the update Steam "remembered" how it was closed. If it was minimized when you closed the client, it launched minimized, too. Now, it seems, every time you close/shutdown/exit the client it will first open the client window and then exit. I suspect this is the reason why it won't launch minimized anymore.

While I haven't tried this myself, some reddit posts suggest this doesn't work anymore after the update.

Well it's working for me.
Key feature is -minimized, not so much the -silent.
I haven't seen -minimized mentioned anywhere else. But also I don't use reddit.

For me both -vgui and -minimized where needed.
The -silent was already there, so I let that one be.
Thanks for this @Happy!

Now I've got all threee and it's working wonderful.
It's quite sad that I can't use the new UI, but can't really be bothered by it in the least.

Valve, step up your game! This is quite shameful IMO. Just add another toggle that let's me start it minimized. It either starts minimized or not automatically at all.

I don't know how widespread this bug is, all I know is that it's not universal.
For me, Steam is still minimized on startup, nothing changed in this regard. So maybe the problem only occurs with certain settings? Have you tried fiddling with the interface settings?

Thanks - opening and not minimising was bugging the hell out of me. Only other solution was to stop it loading at start-up.

So after making the change to the Reg it would log in and stay in the taskbar like it should always have been. But then i got an error that wouldnt allow me to post on here . lol
