Steam is randomly sending watch requests to my friends
Exactly as the title says. My friend just messaged me a few minutes ago saying that he'll accept my request when the game starts...but I had no idea what he was talking about, until he showed me a screenshot of a request that I had allegedly sent minutes before asking to view his stream.

He then showed me several other screenshots of other view requests I'd allegedly sent him, even though I was never even at my computer for the dates he provided me with.

What is this? A scam? Has my account been compromised? What gives?

If you believe someone on your account do this, don't skip any steps.

1. Scan for malware https://www.malwarebytes.com/

2. Deauthorize all other devices https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage

3. Change passwords from a clean computer.

4. Generate new backup codes https://store.steampowered.com/twofactor/manage

5. Revoke all API keys, there should be none.

For how someone get on your account it can happen if you login to phishing site, or gave login info to someone.

They track your perusal history. If you are not comfortable with that then you can withdraw your consent at anytime DownBDanny. If you feel violated contact them immediately. You can rest easy that your account was not compromised. The reason you know that is they send directly to you personally - thru email, phone or mobile. When my Twitter was hacked they cracked my password unfortunately I didn't receive their email promptly. I'm the fool for not keeping updated in my gmail. I hope this was helpful in some regard. Sorry, I went a bit off topic. My bad.

Ok, so I just want to add an update to this.

So it only seems to happen with one friend in particular. The moment I load any game on Steam, they seem to immediately get an automated request from "myself" asking to view whatever they happen to be streaming/playing at the time.

They have the notification in their inbox on their end, but I don't have anything on mine. It appears to be happening without fail literally every single time. I don't think my account has been compromised, but it's really annoying when they send me a message thinking I'm asking to watch them when I'm not.

How do I fix this? How the heck does a bug like this even happen?

Are you sure it’s not Discord doing that

The only thing I can think of for notification is this.
https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/548F-BC55-89EB-1BC8#13

When friend send a request, the request may reappear again if the friend reopen watch link that send request to them, can happen if right click on person then click watch, or if end stream, but the friend that didn't close their web player which resend request.

Otherwise not sure what the issue can be exactly.

That's what I initially thought, but the one time I did watch my friend, I was invited specifically via Steam. I watched for a bit, and then closed the stream. Ever since then, whenever I've played a game on Steam, my friend gets a request allegedly from myself asking to let me watch them.

That's what I don't understand, and neither does my friend. He thinks I keep sending him watch requests which he authorizes, and then doesn't understand why I'm so confused when he asks what I thought streams that I haven't personally seen.

Just to double check, he shown you his screenshot showing steam chat with you requesting to watch him whenever you launch a game?

I'm gonna say both you & your friend try this method it clean client redownload, this way removes any error. otherwise it has be something else, because there no option to get notice of when someone starts streaming on Steam.

1, Go to where Steam is installed.
2. Delete everything except these "Steamapp" folder & "Steam.exe" file.
3. Run Steam.exe and test to see if issue resolved.

This is happening to me. A friend has gotten a request from me to watch is game on two separate occasions now and it's not me. Did you find out what was causing this or a fix?
