The percentages of good versus evil aren't starkly one versus one. The percentage of posts that are helpful massively outnumber those that are abusive. Certain forums have a higher percentage of unhelpful posts than others - Team Fortress 2 seems to get more posters who are arrogant, contemptuous of others' views, and hostile to new players - but even then I'd suspect helpful responses outnumber hostile ones.
The community tends to be vehemently hostile to cheats and those bemoaning their bans rarely receive much, if any, sympathy.
More morally suspect there seems to be little sympathy for those that have been cheated in "obvious" frauds or those who have simply invested their money unwisely.
Also on those few areas of contention that aren't covered by Steam bans there can be strongly felt debate. Sometimes these deteriorate into abuse, sometimes they don't.
The anonymity of the internet and the limited social consequences for those whose Steam profiles give little clue as to their real world identities give users some degree of licence to behave as they will without thought of consequence. Not total licence - you can be banned from forums.
So here you see more people in their "true colours" without the full force of social pressure to shape them.
S.x.
I only added "and now maybe price if you don't mind that guy that knows a guy putting a chip in it so you can get cheaper games." a few years later as a situational pro.
Even that has been blown out of the water (hello steam link). Last time I saw my nephew it befundled me how much consoles are being made to be like pcs. What's coming next, pick your own console parts? xD
Actually, now that I think of it, the games WERE better in consoles during 16 bit era and before and it wasn't just from exclusivity. Any adaptation to console from a popular title, let's say, prince of persia for example, was actually alot better on console. But alas, that was a golden age for consoles.
"My (insert whatever) is better than yours/My (insert whatever) is the best" is a common thing.
You have that with gamers since the dawn of gaming. Be it Atari 2600 vs. Intellivision vs. Colecovision or the classic Sega vs. Nintendo of the late 80's and 90's. You have the same with music (a classic example is the old Metallica vs. Megadeth war that goes on for over 3 decades) and of course to sports where fans say their club/team is the best of all time and others suck.
Altough with the PC vs. Console debate at least it's pretty obvious to everybody that the PC is superior in basically every way imaginable and console have no reason to exist anymore. Consoles were awesome in the 80's and 90's and until the PS2 Era but honestly everything since then is just wanna-be PC's with underpowered Hardware, extra fee for online gaming, games cost more and being limited to be able to use a gamepad. The only console since than that had a reason to exist was the Wii because it cathered to a different crowd of gamers and was extremely different to anything else on the market. But the Xbox and Playstations of the past 2 generations? What reason to exist have they actually? I own a Xbox 360 and it was basically only bought because of Red Dead Redemption and NHL. Without consoles i could have gotten the games on PC. Imagine RDR on PC, it's an awesome game in it's own right but with the modding scene the PC has? The game would've been even more incredible.
Heres the thing those debates are aginst other consoles, the pc fan base is the only one i know that attacks members of their own damn team. Thats something you wont see in other consoles. I never seen a fourm about oh you dont have two ps4 controllers what a casul. yes while PCs do vary the only main difference between the different PCs is the graphics in which they can play games, and graphics is the one things most hardore gamers agree dont matter as much as gameplay. Or else half-life games, would be the most crappy pc game ever and The Order is a god of the pc genra.
All other hardware "bound" gamers are whiny little fanboys, not understanding, that exclusive games on any hardware is bad for gaming in general.
