Your thoughts on a third person zombie shooter
I've been wanting to make a game that feels similar to Zombies from the original Black Ops -- but with a story. I think it would be fun to have a game with objectives mixed with surviving waves of zombies that drop perks.

Any thoughts?

Don't do it, it has been made countless times before with more resources and polish than you ever can provide.
You should really think what will make your game unique.

I want to be more comical about certain aspects of the game. For example, imagine a super saiyan perk: you can "go saiyan" and insta-kill all the zombies within a certain radius. (Of course, this perk would only be unlocked after doing something awesome).

What do you all think?

Also, stay tuned -- I'll be posting a video soon.

So what are you? Programmer, artist? I'm currently at uni learning programming for games so interested in these things. Are you working alone. Also what are you making it it?

If the concept is fully fledged into a game, or at least an alpha of it, it might be better off over at the Steam Greenlight hub or at other dedicated platforms for game developers.

I'm afraid the postings from the OP start skirting on advertising (such as the facebook page, the screenshots or the upcoming video), so I'd suggest holding back on that. Asking for ideas is okay.

Zombie games have been done to death for years now, hell years ago they were done to death.

There's very little story you can add to zombie games, even friendly zombies have been done to death. Early access titles, survival and zombie goes hand in hand like bread and butter but a lot of people are sick of it and the market is showing. Dead Rising 4, That (admitedly horrible) Res Evil Spin off in racoon city and numerous other new titles, developed by hard hitting industries are failing to sell them well...Even infinite warfare sold crap despite having the next CoD game bundled with Zombies and what some (not me) see as the most iconic CoD remastered. I don't know how well the Telltale series new ones did but that can be an exception because it's a story that's been followed for a long time, with exceptional writers.

But hey, if you really want to go for it, then good luck.

The zombie games market is still huge and ppl still love them. I mean, look at games like Day Z, 7 days to die, Dead Island Epidemic, Unturned, Dying Light, How to Survive, and the CoD zombies mode is still very much loved.

All those are old. 7D2D recently came to console and it wasn't received very well. DayZ is one of the first true survival ones where it's success is what spawned the rest. If CoD zombies mode was still very much loved it would have sold a lot better than it did. Dying light is old and the only one with a proper story.

The market is no where close to where it was even just a few years ago. Hell, even a couple years ago people were constantly saying enough already.

The CoD zombies on the CoD greats such as Black Ops and others is still loved by fans across the globe. Just because 7D2D isn't loved on the console people still constantly play it on PC and I know that ppl are crazy for it on steam. CoD Infinite Warfare is just a failure, nothing Treyarch can't rebuild from.

Yeah, I dont think I need to continue when you say a game with mostly positive reviews that "ppl are crazy for it" or that one of the games thats widely used as an insult is loved by fans across the globe. Which btw blops3 has mixed reviews, so striving for quality there. People love being peed on across the globe, doesnt mean its good to the mass

I never said anything about black ops 3 being good thats maybe my least favorite. And people ARE crazy for 7D2D thats why it has mostly positive reviews :steamfacepalm:. And if CoD Black Ops isn't loved across the world how come its one of the best selling games of all time?

Wow great discussion. I'll respond in order:

Donna:
I'm a recent uni grad and a full time software engineer (not in the video game game industry). I'm working on this game by my self, but I'm getting a lot of ideas/critique from my friends and all of you.

Fox:
Sorry about that. I'll be making a website soon, and I won't post anymore media/facebook on this thread.

Lzziee/Spartan/(everyone):
I was playing a side mission in Boarderlands 2 with one of my friends and the side mission was to survive 5 waves of enemies -- that side mission combined the same concept of CoD Zombies with it's own comical theme. That side mission was a freakin thrill ride and it Really inspired me to make this game.

I want the game that i am working (still deciding on story based or round based) to have a mix of startling moments and just plain stupid fun moments -- imagine calling in an airdrop and getting a perk that slows down time. What do you guys think about that?

AWESOME! That sounds like it would be great! A good idea would be to not add in so many scary moments like jumpscares and stuff so much that it would become a horror game, unless thats what your going for of course. Maybe add in a feature to switch between 1st and 3rd persons? Idk but it sounds like the game is coming along great!

It doesn't matter that zombie games have been done to death because PC users a uniquely attracted to them, even when they're mediocre (or especially when they're mediocre if you count Dayz).

All media will be posted on that website, i.e. this is the last link I post in this forum (sorry about that Fox).
I'm afraid that kind of post won't be able to be allowed either, otherwise a lot of advertisers would suddently find themselves posting a "last link" to their website.

Note that putting links to your game on your profile is tolerated : you might wish to pursue this avenue instead if you wish to raise awareness about your game.

As said in my message earlier, consider also dedicated avenues for that part, be it other websites or dedicated Steam groups (nobody even stops you from making one of your own and have another interaction outlet here for those interested).
