Why do people buy "Steam Summer Sale Trading Cards"?
Does not make any sense. I would sell them and get the $, but some people prefer buying them. Why?

To craft badges, perhaps?

And what does this do?

Crafting badges gives you xp, which levels up your Steam profile. Every 10 levels, you get a showcase for your profile + an increased chance to receive booster packs.

Hello HAPY, well think differently, If you as you say selling your cards and there will be no one who buys them, how will you sell them in the first place ?

There's always someone who will buy the cards. You just have to be smart when pricing them. If you're too greedy, they will sit there for a long, long time.

I sometimes buy the cards, usually when I need a couple cards to complete a badge for a game I already have, and when the cards are cheap. For the summer sale badge, I bought two at 8 cents each. I doubt I'll get a level 5 badge, though, just the basic one's fine. Depends a bit on where the prices go.

It's ultimately pointless and just for the fun. Kind of like a mini game that serves no real purpose once you have a few showcases and don't lack friend list slots.

You do get a higher chance to get booster packs for games as your Steam level increases, but they are so infrequent that you'll probably never break even.

Well there are actually a few good reasons to buy cards. The first of which is fairly obvious. It allows you to craft more badges, get more perks, and increase your status within the community itself. You can indulge in the satisfaction that comes from collecting, and play the meta game. Just like with the stock market you can buy low and sell high. See if you can turn a profit on a bit of speculation. Lastly you can do it out of a sense of altruism. It is a relatively cheap way to take care of your friends. Just buy a card someone else needs and gift it to them.
