NIche, which I mentioned above is pretty open to all players, regardless of their understanding of genetics, and only need a mild/passing interest in genetics IMHO in order to play and succeed at. But if genetics is interesting to you, I'd also suggest looking into Sparkle, and Creatura.
FOr holidays, the sale price most of these games makes them very worth it to those who may be on the fence or on a constrained budget.

Unlike "Zoo Tycoon" games before it, it places all focus on the animals and their welfare. It's just fun to create exhibits that suit the needs of each one and then watching them interact with each other and the environment. Also, breeding those rare albino animals is always cool.
(And baby animals are just very cute...except for the wildebeest....their evil....very...very...evil...it's always the quiet ones...)
