Loved those when I was a kid.
I also enjoyed Max Payne 1 and 2, Cossacks the Art of War, Battle For Middle Earth 2, GTA Vice City, Harry Potter Quidditch World Cup, NBA Live 2003, Lego Racers, Outwars, Sid Meier's Pirates, Simpsons Hit&Run, Star Wars Episode 1 Racer, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast & Jedi Academy, Morrowind, TMNT Mutant Melee, Tomb Raider Collection, Robin Hood The Legend of Sherwood Forest, Yugioh games, and many more.. If I remember them I'll update the list
Edit #1: Just realised most of those games are really old, like really. Dunno how many of them can you find on Steam, but it's worth trying.
When the child has completed Portal and Portal 2, by the age of 10-12 they will be intelligent enough to tackle The Talos Principle and debate philosophy with an... Well I don't want to give spoilers. LoL
Those are must-buys (especially Spy Fox and Pajama Sam, in my opinion)
2. Buy Fallout 1-2, The Witcher 1, Hitman 2, Baldur's Gate 1-2, Icewind Dale, Planescape Torment, Assassin's Creed 1, Far Cry 1, Morrowind, Deus ex and many others great games.
3. play.
there is no reason to avoid good games at any age.
Chariot
Fable
Grow home
Pinball fx 2
Peggle
pix the cat
Roll'd
Riptide gp 2
Shattered planet
Snow - free2play
Starwhal
Worms - any but reloaded is the best
Ocenahorn monster of uncharted seas
Penarium - may be a little hard but is very fun
Rayman - does need a uplay account
Hope this helps and most of these have controller support.
However generlly for 5 - 8 year olds I'd recommend BBC games. All free, most very simple, and nothing age inappropriate.
