Best thing to do is ignore the incoming requests, unless you know they are adding you for a reason don't engage them. They'll most likely try to scam you for your items.
But you can usually open your Steam Overlay while in game and click Recent Players and see player's profiles that way.
They don't directly search you if that's what you're worried about, and they can only see details you have on public on your Steam profile.
Limit them to 10 requests per day per steam level, most people who are legit have level 5, that's 50 friend requests a day, i doubt you need more than that.
I've set my account to private and they're still adding me, getting 10 a day, how do they send requests to a private account...
Blocking them is pointless as they make new accounts.
There's no telling but be careful and avoid viewing media that people message to you. It's pretty common knowledge that hackers use programs to "bind" exe or other files into images, making it execute when viewed.
