Will it stay off forever for that game or until i restart my computor everytime? I dont mind too much if its a one time thing but i do hate it nontheless .
Though it's a recent addition, so I guess we'll have to find out.
I agree with you, btw, on it becoming more and more "mobile" regarding the feel of the library. The nagging for reviews after 3 and 10 hours (and probably other hour points) is annoying as well. Wish we could turn that off as well.
I may want to know news about the games in my Steam Library, but:
1. only sometimes, and definitely not most of the time, and
2. only for certain games, and this means excluding many of those random games I once picked up as freebies, which turned out to be a mistake, because they can now advertise at me.
Also, sometimes, I don't want to see the news now but I want to come back to it later.
None of these are well-served by the What's New shelf. The What's New shelf basically displays news from all my games (with some tweakability, but the fact that they're not just clean on/off options suggests that Valve might have been trying to still let game devs advertise some, but just not as much, which is still an annoyance. And if I dismiss anything, it's also just gone. So basically I either check out the news now, or it's stuck there taking up space until I do, or I dismiss it and have to dig it back up later.
It doesn't have to be a pain like this. But Valve designed it to be a pain.
Now, sure, you could say, Steam is what it is, Valve designed it the way it is, and I either accept it or stop using it. Well, then Steam's not gonna get any better.
But these days I have stopped using it, to varying extents. I use -no-browser so I don't even bother going into my Library at all (meaning I will miss all the news about my games, but frankly I don't care that much that I miss it), and I've also stopped playing my Steam games as much (and also don't keep my Steam client on as often as I used to).
Which pretty much means this design backfired pretty badly.
Also, yes, it's advertising. Even when it's not advertising a purchaseable item, it's still advertising for attention. If you ask any half-competent advertiser you'll know that getting people's attention, getting a product into people's heads -- even if it isn't something they immediately want to buy -- is a big deal in its own right.
Besides, game devs are actually advised to think about using content updates to drum up more activity from their playerbase. Which in turn means more players playing the game and more advertising by people playing it with a presence on social media and so forth.
I have worked in the game industry long enough to witness the shift into demanding production have degrees in psychology. I am tired of the three steps forward one step back methods of attempting to make highly predatory behavior something you think is appropriate. If you want to push me into remembering that I don't own any of these games and this whole place is nothing more than an advertising scam every single time I look at your hud, keep doing exactly this thing.
That literally makes no sense ever. Do you not know what a scam is?
Why are you breaking libel and slander laws? LOL.
That's not cool.
It's against the law to accuse someone of committing a crime, and accusing any business of a scam automatically triggers it being Libel or Slander, unless you can provide evidence of them selling something that does not exist.
Which is what a scam is.
By definition.
Don't twist words. IT's not cool.
Seriously, you can get sued for libel or slander here. For accusing a company of a crime.
Scams are crimes.
Please look up the law.
Finally, let's say you try the case anyway, is it actually worth it financially to attempt to seek damages on my opinion on a steam forum? Probably not considering the court fees and paying of lawyers and then you still have to prove that I directly caused financial damages and the amount you can get from me is relative to those damages. These are all civil court proceedings and not criminal, so there is nothing but money on the line here.
Do you see at all why your statements could be perceived as a bit hyperbolic? Do have a great day though and feel free to be in conflict with my opinion, just don't expect any legal proceedings as a result of it.
