steam got blocked in indonesia

Hello, from Indonesia here. In these recent weeks I've been trying to open the market or even my profile but steam returned an error everytime (Error -21 or something).

The only way I can access steamcommunity is by using a VPN (like I'm doing right now to access reddit).

and i just found out that our national internet guard (kominfo) blocked not just steam like
Amazon.com (e-commerce)
PayPal
Yahoo (search engine)
Bing (search engine)
Steam
Dota
Counter Strike
Epic Games
Battlenet
Origin

hope this blocking doesn't last long

Check for official notices from your government. You government may have decided to block those sites.

Steam isn't registered yet in govt's Foreign Electronic System Operator (you can check it out here: https://pse.kominfo.go.id/home/pse-asing). It was last night (I think) for digital platforms to register, before eventually getting blocked. Microsoft did it. Google did it. But Steam didn't. Well you know what happen now...

I just hope Kominfo undo their doings or atleast Steam clarifying things and actually solves this problem for us all.
I've already buy some games from Steam after all. There will be more uproars if they don't address this problems. I'm so pissed, I write this all... Thank you.

EDIT: For those who want to know how the hell did I get here, even if it's blocked there. I use Google Public DNS. Use it. Unfortunately, my Steam client isn't reaching out (still blocked). So for now I use browser.

Well you can use Cloudflare DNS, because its faster, and its working for me. if still can't. probably try these stuff:

➡ Download APP 1.1.1.1 on https://1.1.1.1/
➡ Install the App
➡ After done installing it, open 1.1.1.1 (It will be called CLoudflare WARP on windows)
➡ Click on settings
➡ Choose the 1.1.1.1 (Not the 1.1.1.1 with WARP)
➡ Wait for a moment till your connection register the DNS
➡ Try to connect to steam or epic games or any other blocked apps/sites

Clearly, they would have issues with this policy given that it would grant the Indonesian government the right to control content moderation and access to users' data without the need for a warrant.

Well, Valve can, but (correct me if I wrong) that would mean Steam will be heavily under surveillance by govt. This could potentially mean bigger chance of censorships, and user tracking (mainly Indonesian accounts) by govt. In nutshell: If registered, Steam is consent to do what govt told to, and even share everything to govt (even your hentai game collection...).

EDIT: I'm bit of paranoid, but let's hope that spying & censorship thing isn't what Kominfo will gonna do...

After all, this PSE errr... thing should not be exist at all...

Things started to heated here. #blokirkominfo is viral in Indonesian's Twitter now. Johnny G. Plate (Ministry of Comm and Info) still not responding to this uproar until now.

do you know what they ask to get into that list? Unilaterial rights to demand removal of anything on the spot within 4 hours of being told to, and complete access to user data whenever asked. It's a naked power grab and a breach of consumer rights. I don't care if other places were stupid enough to do it,. I hope Valve doesn't.

Steam client stopped working for me but I can still access the steam webpage through a browser, inconvenient but at least it's something. Updating and downloading already owned games through the client works fine but I'm a bit wary of buying new games and steam wallet for now.

If the manner they have blocked these services is as pedestrian as making changes to the ISPs' proprietary DNS servers, all you have to do is either set your own DNS servers on your router setup page to Google's (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare's (1.1.1.1). Alternatively, you can make that change locally on each PC by editing your network adapter's settings.

Not knowing their level of competence, this one-minute test is worth a try to find out if they have done something as simple as that.

Indonesian here. Can confirm that utilizing Cloudfare DNS works. Its a very simple workaround because Kominfo's runned by a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Gardener. Don't believe me? Check his wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_G._Plate
